SkelaStudio

SkelaStudio Interior Design to residential and commercial properties in Edinburgh and the rest of Scotland. The design brief is free and lasts for up to an hour.

Skela Studio offers a complete interior design service which is always individually tailored to meet each client’s needs, style and budget. What we do:

The Design Brief

We believe it is vital to listen carefully to clients requirements. The success of any project will rely on the understanding and interpretation of the clients brief, their ideas, specific requests, likes, dislikes, timescale and

budget. Concept Development

This process involves exploration of the clients brief with a view to finding the solutions and designs the client is looking for. Communication with the client and sharing of simultaneous ideas begin to refine the desired path the client is seeking. Mood Boards

A mood board is compiled displaying a selection of samples, finishes and images to illustrate the design concept and scheme. Detailed Design

If required, detailed design includes space planning in the form of scale line drawings and visuals to demonstrate how the space will look. From here you have an option to finish the rest of the work yourself or relax and let us do the procurement and project management. Project Management

Skela Studio is able to project manage your works, overseeing and organising the installation from start to finish. Design by Post

‘Design by post’ is our service created to give you the tools you need to revamp your room. It is a convenient service that offers you interior design consultancy with no site visit required. We will ask you to complete a questionnaire to help us get a feel for your requirements and tastes. You will need to send us photos of your room together with room measurements where required and we’ll send you a mood board, a sample board and a shopping list showing suggestions of suppliers. Kitty & Gus, Kelso: a shop that sells fashion, gifts, homewares and bespoke curtains all under one roof.

Owner Rachel came to me ahead of a February opening, moving from a small, cramped space into a much larger one. The brief was to make the shop easy to navigate, use the new space well without it feeling under-furnished, and give the new curtain consultation area a proper home within the shop.

We worked through the layout, then built it up in layers: a colour and materials palette (Duck Egg woodwork, brass and gold accents, natural wood flooring), a zoning plan ranking selling space by priority, and treatments for the trickier areas.

One of my favourite parts of this project was the blocked shopfront window. Rather than let it become dead frontage, we turned it into a "through the window" scene suggesting a behind-the-scenes workshop, with a QR code linking straight to appointment booking.

The result is a shop where clothing, gifts, homewares and the curtain service each have their own space to breathe, while one consistent palette ties it all together.

My role has grown from the original shop transformation into ongoing creative direction and visual merchandising support, helping the team make the most of their space and keep up with the needs of a growing business.

Over the three days we refreshed the visual merchandising, reviewed the customer journey and explored expanding the made-to-measure service.
One of the most rewarding parts was hearing tourists comment on the interior, and watching people stop to photograph the window displays. A lovely reminder of how good retail design becomes part of someone's experience of a place.

A huge well done to the Ben Wyvis Kilts team too, for taking such good care of the shop and keeping it looking so welcoming.

I love returning to a completed project and seeing how the business and the space continue to evolve. A successful retail interior should never stand still. It should grow alongside the business it supports.

And of course, the beautiful train journey between Edinburgh and Inverness made the trip even more enjoyable.

I've shared the original before-and-after transformation in the comments.

I’ve just shared a new case study on my website, featuring one of my long-standing commercial clients, MacGregor & MacDuff.

This project involved knocking through and joining three neighbouring retail units to create one connected space.

The brief centred on four key things: improving the flow between the units, creating dedicated groom’s rooms with proper fitting space for wedding parties, designing a welcome desk that gives staff a clear point to manage appointments and greet customers, and planning lighting that does justice to the fittings themselves. In a space like this, mirrors, lighting and how people see themselves matter enormously.

The bigger challenge was bringing the MacGregor & MacDuff brand into a new space in a way that felt more modern than the previous shops I’ve worked on with them, while still retaining the heritage, craftsmanship and sense of occasion the brand is built on.

Modernising a retail space doesn’t mean stripping away what makes a brand recognisable. Done well, it gives the brand room to evolve.

I’ll be sharing some before-and-after images here, but you can read the full case study on the website.

Just 6 spaces left for my October Interior Design Masterclass, and early bird pricing ends 1 September.
Book before then and it's £167. After 1 September, it's £187.
Saturday 24th October, 10.30am to 3.30pm, at The Scotsman Hotel. A full day covering design styles, colour, pattern and texture, finishing with your own moodboard to take home. Lunch and refreshments included.
This one's for anyone who's ever stood in a room feeling stuck. Too many ideas, not enough clarity, or a Pinterest board that's gone nowhere. I'll walk you through the process I actually use with clients, so you leave with a proper starting point rather than more inspiration to sit on.
Book here: https://aleksandrajhannah.com/product/interior-design-workshop-october-edinburgh/

Renovating a whole home is a big undertaking, and most of the stress doesn't come from the design decisions. It comes from managing everyone and everything at once: trades, timelines, sourcing, snagging, all while trying to keep sight of what you actually wanted the place to feel like.
That's the part I take off your plate.
At Skela Studio, I run full home renovations from first concept through to final finish. Design, trade management and sourcing, all handled as one joined-up process, with me as your single point of contact throughout.
If you're planning a full renovation in Edinburgh or beyond and want it managed properly rather than pieced together, I'd love to hear about it.

One of my recent commercial projects was helping transform an office space into a piano school. The client recently left this lovely feedback, which meant a great deal after all the work that went into developing the layout and creating a flexible teaching environment.

The brief was to transform a former office space into a functional and welcoming piano school. My role focused on space planning and interior design, creating three group teaching classrooms, two one-to-one teaching rooms, a reception and waiting area, and a recital space centred around a baby grand piano.

Alongside the layouts, I developed storage solutions, selected furniture, colours and materials, and created visuals to help bring the vision to life before construction.

From early pop-up spaces in London and Manchester to projects across Ayrshire, Dumbarton, Glasgow and now Edinburgh, it’s been lovely seeing MacGregor and MacDuff continue to grow and evolve over the years.

One of the nicest parts of working in commercial interiors is helping businesses shape spaces that develop alongside the brand and the people behind it.

Really enjoyed being part of this latest Edinburgh project and seeing the refreshed space come to life ✨

New spaces. New designs.
Long-term collaboration in motion.

Really inspired after visiting the Royal Scottish Academy exhibition celebrating 200 years of the RSA.

As part of continuing my own creative development and staying connected to contemporary art and design, I’ve now become an RSA member.

I think good interior design comes from constantly learning, observing, and engaging with wider creative culture — not just following trends.

Looking forward to more exhibitions and events throughout the year.
