We're proud to be assisting our clients to deliver this exciting project, funded by investment from both the Scottish and the UK Government as part of the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, turning a former mill site in Innerleithen into a world-leading Mountain Bike Innovation Centre.

Work is underway on world-leading Mountain Bike Innovation Centre! 🚲

UK Government Scotland Office Minister Kirsty McNeill has visited Innerleithen to mark the start of works this week to turn Caerlee Mill into a flagship facility for active tourism, Research & Development and innovation.

The Minister also visited local business Tweed Valley Bikes, to find out more about the Centre’s potential impact for the mountain bike industry and local economy.

Delighted to be invited back for this official opening. Thank you to staff and pupils for a wonderful morning seeing the new school in use with smiles all round!

West Lothian’s newest primary school has been officially opened.

A special ceremony involving the school and invited guests took place at Hawkhill Primary in Winchburgh.

Hawkhill pupils were the stars of the show, performing two songs for the appreciative audience.

Hawkhill Primary school was completed ahead of time and on budget, and was fully-funded by Winchburgh Developments Ltd as part of the development agreement linked with new housing in the area.

The new school is required to meet the increasing demand for school places in the growing community of Winchburgh, which is a Core Development Area for West Lothian.

A drop-in public engagement session is being held this Friday providing updates on the Tweedbank Care Village.

Taking place between 10-11.30am at the Inspire Academy in Tweedbank, adjacent to the care village development site, the session aims to showcase in more detail plans for the site as the project moves into the groundworks phase.

Attendees will be able to view the approved plans for the site in more detail with images and renderings of the development on show and will get a first look at the proposed colour scheme and innovative technologies that could be used to deliver care at the development.

It will also provide the opportunity to hear from members of SBC staff working on the project who can discus in more detail the next stages of the development.

Starting work at Herdmanflat is a key milestone in this development and one which is testament to the successful partnership working between Hub South East and East Lothian Council and the great amount of work that has gone on in the background by all those involved to reach this important stage.

This project has been an excellent example of a place-based approach, extensive community engagement and master-planning to meet the collective ambitions of all parties to reduce inequalities over the longer term and deliver affordable housing that promotes independence and ageing in place. We look forward to making these exciting plans a reality.

Initial work on the Herdmanflat site in Haddington, including tree preservation work, is due to start around Tuesday 16 September. Members of the public will still be able to access most of the site at this time but access will not be possible once construction work starts - likely around 29 September.

This first phase, which was approved by Planning Committee in May this year, will feature four three-storey buildings and one two-storey building, accommodating 51 homes. The units are all designed for an aging population including dementia friendly design, and all 51 homes have been designed to be accessible to wheelchair users if ever required, and to be easily adaptable in the future to suit individual tenant needs.

The Council purchased the site from NHS Lothian in April 2020, with support from the Scottish Government, when the hospital’s services moved to the new East Lothian Community Hospital. Cruden Group has been appointed main contractor by the council’s development partner Hub South East Scotland Ltd

Making a wider social impact is a key driver of the Hub programme and yesterday in Glasgow, we heard from the 10 charities across Scotland making this happen through the Hub Community Foundation's Building Brighter Futures Fund with Inspiring Scotland.

After last year's showcase of inspiring stories of the real difference being made to support young people across the country, this year we heard from the charities as they outlined their wishes for the future - with common themes emerging, from more practical opportunities for young people in learning employability and life skills to more whole family support. Lots of food for thought about how we can help support this in our industry.

It was particularly good to catch up with Rebecca and Ritchie from Move On & Perry from Grassmarket Community Project - our regional charities - finding out about the inspiring work they do and making connections to work closer together in the future.

We're excited to be delivering this new Mountain Bike Innovation Centre in partnership with Scottish Borders Council, South of Scotland Enterprise, Borderlands Partnership, Edinburgh Napier University & Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland. It's fantastic to reach this project milestone and we look forward to working with Morrison Construction to make these exciting plans (by Oberlanders Architects), a reality.

Great news - the timetable for construction of the new Mountain Bike Innovation Centre has been unveiled, after planning permission was secured! 🚲

We continue to mark Hub South East's 15th Birthday this month. Today we look at 15 Innovations and Firsts....

As the first of five hubs established in Scotland, we've helped our clients deliver on a number of firsts, including the first Passivhaus accredited local authority nursery in Scotland (Blackridge for West Lothian Council), the first drive through Covid Vaccination Centre in the Lothians (with NHS Lothian), Scotland's first revenue funded DBFM facility (James Gillespie's School Campus with the City of Edinburgh Council) and the first secondary school delivered through the Scottish Government's LEIP programme (at the Wallyford Learning Campus with East Lothian Council).

Through our unique partnership with public sector bodies in the South East of Scotland, over the last 15 years we have developed innovative solutions, demonstrating our strength as a true development partner, including innovations in finance eg bundling projects for economies of scale (such as the Lothian Healthcare Bundle) and developing a new Hub Institutional Funding Model (HIFM), as well as innovations is design (from embracing learning without walls at West Calder High School to using shipping containers as spaces for artists and forest kindergartens in Edinburgh), as well as developing a model of repeatable designs for school extensions in Edinburgh and embracing modular construction on our first housing project in West Lothian. We've supported clients in their drive to net zero, including low carbon initiatives (such as Queensferry High) and we've facilitated new service delivery models in health and social care (including Herdmanflat in East Lothian and Tweedbank Care Village in the Scottish Borders). In addition to this, we've focused on Quality, developing a Quality Register across our supply chain to learn from best practice, and creating wider social impact has been key, creating new a unique partnership providing onsite experience for existing Council apprentices.

These are just some of the innovations and firsts we've been involved in and we look forward to working in partnership with clients and our supply chain on many more!
