Wondering if Heat Pumps are Suitable for Old Houses?

Many older homes (especially pre-1950s) have features - solid walls, thin insulation, older windows/doors and radiators built for high temperatures that make them different from modern houses.

But you can install an air-source heat pump (ASHP) in an older house. It’s all about preparation. Key steps for success:
1️⃣ Boost insulation and draught-proofing (walls, loft, floors, windows) to reduce heat loss.
2️⃣ Ensure heating system is compatible - that usually means larger radiators or underfloor heating to make the most of lower-temperature output from heat pumps.
3️⃣ Provide hot-water storage (a cylinder or tank), especially if replacing a combi boiler system.
4️⃣ Have space for the external unit, with good airflow - commonly beside a side or back wall.

✅ When done properly, ASHPs deliver clean, efficient, even heating - reducing carbon footprint and often cutting running costs. Grants are even be available to help with installation.
