Not what you expect to find when you attend a suspected storage heater not working.

Cause by what was most likely a slack connection in the “screwfix special” board. Installed by a known cowboy electrician based in Edinburgh - who isn’t with a register body. Circuits not identified. No certification. No proof of testing.

The same electrician installed the meter tails around arse for elbow on the main consumer unit too 🤠

When testing our new board we discovered that the cpc wasn’t connected to the immersion and that the off-peak immersion was tripped. The customer had been using the boost every morning. So we’ve fixed that too for a cup of tea. Oh, and issued a certificate for the work with our NICEIC registration.

Another valid example of “just use an electrician”

A cold running shower within its warranty period so Mira was called out to repair but refused. The first time I’ve seen Mira condem a shower. (They also charge a call-out fee)

I was then contacted to do repair properly. All It needed was the 3” of brick raggled out to allow some more length on the cable to connect it straight in without the “extension”.
How this didn’t arc/burnt-out is beyond me.

P.s if you have a faulty out of warranty electric shower, we repair them too. 🚿

Another EICR find. 🔍

Stranded Steel wiring was typically installed in the 1960/70’s before we switched to copper wiring. The insulation is falling off the steel cores it’s so worn. Unfortunately the masking tape repair doesn’t offer the same level of protection as insulation. I saw the chance to throw in a pun then but passed on the opportunity.

Rewire to the circuit required.

Curious to know who changed the consumer unit last year and deemed the circuit safe for continued use.

Today’s EICR find we have 🔍

An exposed joint for the oven. No joint box used, exposed live parts, the incorrect size crimps used and the cores cut down to accommodate.

Then had they tested the cable was safe for use, they’d have discovered that the live and neutral were reversed polarity and that the earth wasn’t connected.

So had that exposed cable touched the oven housing, the housing would become live.

This is why we do EICR’s and why you should use and electrician

Apology to whoever needs it.

After experiencing a “chirping” smoke alarm in the middle of the night and unfortunately finding something harder to try sleep through than Emma’s snoring after a night out. We’ve now made it our promise to drop whatever we’re doing and attend any beeping smoke alarm immediately, because that was bloody annoying.

I’d also like to apologise to anyone who caught me in my boxers, after peeling myself out my bed and getting 9v battery out the back of the van late last night.
