THIS IS A PROPER RENOVATION.

A full transformation on this one — both dormers stripped right back to the bones and rebuilt the right way.

We uncovered 3 layers of old mineral felt and insulation on the roofs, all removed along with the existing coverings.

All old rosemary tiles to the faces and sides were stripped out, taking everything back to structure so we could start fresh.

The build-up was then completed with:
• New premium breathable membrane throughout
• High quality composite cladding system in anthracite with aluminium trims — no bending or warping over time
• 2 new Alwitra VSK single ply roofs installed with fresh insulation
• Code 5 lead where required
• Stainless steel fixings used throughout

We only use materials we trust — products that last and perform properly. No cheap alternatives.

A slightly different post from us this week 👷‍♂️⚠️

We don’t have a project update to share yet as we’re currently hard at work jumping between several ongoing jobs across Edinburgh.

So instead, we thought it would be a good moment to bring awareness to something that affects many people in our industry.

Men’s mental health in construction.

Construction is one of the toughest industries out there — not just physically, but mentally as well.

Sadly the statistics around this are pretty shocking.
In the UK, construction workers are around three times more likely to die by su***de than the national average, with thousands more silently dealing with stress, anxiety and depression.

Sometimes the conversation looks a bit like this:

“Did you have a good day at work?”

You pause for a second.
Because your head’s been chaos all day.

Deadlines.
Money.
Work to finish.
People depending on you.
Problems to solve.
Long days.
Constant pressure.

But you just say…

“Yeah, it was alright.”

And carry it all again tomorrow.

A small reminder to everyone in the trades — check in on your mates.
Sometimes the ones who seem the strongest are carrying the most.

If anyone feels like they’re struggling or stuck mentally, there are some good resources out there aimed specifically at men working in the trades.

One that caught our attention last week was Hard Hat Minds, which shares practical advice and tools aimed at helping men in construction reset mentally and regain some control when things feel overwhelming.

A Busy Few Weeks On The Roofs Of Edinburgh & Kelso

We haven’t posted in a few weeks, but we’ve been busy making the most of the recent spell of dry weather and catching up on a bit of a backlog.

Over the past few weeks we’ve been helping both new and returning customers across Edinburgh and the Borders with a variety of roofing repairs and specialist lead work.

We’ve been working across Edinburgh, as well as spending some time down in Kelso working on a beautiful old cottage overlooking the racecourse. The property has been in the same family since the 1950s — originally gifted as a wedding present and still lived in by the family today, which was great to see.

The cottage required a mixture of repairs including slate repairs, cement work, and additional lead work around coping stones and window areas.

Alongside that we’ve also carried out a range of other works recently including:

• New lead work around chimney surrounds
• Cement ridge repairs
• Wire mesh installation around solar panels to prevent birds nesting underneath
• Plastic gutter repairs on several properties
• New glass fitted into existing cast iron skylights
• Moss removal and roof cleaning

A good mixture of different roofing projects, all now completed.

We’ve now moved onto our next project — two dormer windows undergoing a full transformation. The existing rosemary tiles and felt coverings are being removed and replaced with a new anthracite composite cladding system, along with Alwitra VSK single-ply roofing systems installed to the dormer roofs.

Keep an eye out for the finished project once it’s complete!

There’s no sign of slowing down either, with our next projects already lined up and ready to go!

Another quality roof completed — and what a finish 👌

We’re delighted to have this panel fully stripped and re-slated, bringing it back to life using Spanish CUPA H3 slates — a premium product backed by a 100-year guarantee and one we trust completely. Cupa Pizarras

All timber sarking was checked and repaired where required, a new breathable Permavent Apex membrane installed, eaves support trays fitted into the gutters, and every slate double nailed with 50mm copper nails to ensure long-term strength and durability 🔨

The customer was delighted with the finished result and told us how reassuring it was to finally deal with a company they could trust. We’ve had a pretty slow start to the year after not feeling great over the festive and New Year period, which continued into the New Year — but we’re back now and straight into it 💪

We’re kicking things off with a lovely little panel of Norwegian Rouge slates being stripped and re-slated using Spanish CUPA H3 — by far the best Spanish slate on the market and the only Spanish slate we choose to work with 👌 These slates also come with a 100-year guarantee, so you know you’re getting a roof built to last. 🎆 Happy New Year from Spence Roofing 🎆

This past year has genuinely been the best year of my life — both personally and in business. Spence Roofing has continued to grow — probably quicker than I ever expected — and that’s all down to the customers who’ve put their faith in us to deliver. I’m genuinely grateful for every job, every recommendation, and every bit of support 💚

I’ve worked hard every single day for the last 18 years — partly because it’s always felt expected of me. I’ve always tried to be the one people come to for help. My family and friends know that if they ever need anything, I’ll do whatever I can. I’ve never shied away from that responsibility — and a lot of what I’ve achieved so far has simply felt like meeting expectations, rather than anything more.

But now, with our baby girl on the way, I’ve got a real sense of motivation and purpose like never before — and who knows what we can achieve as a company, and what I can grow into as a man and a dad. Who knows what the world has in store next year — but if you’d asked me this time last year where I’d be today, I’d never have predicted this. And I’m grateful for every step that’s led me here 👶💗

🎄 Merry Christmas from Spence Roofing 🎄

That’s us closed up shop for Christmas! 🎅
Some much-needed time off after a very busy year.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to our customers, family, and friends for the continued support throughout the year — it really is appreciated.

We do have a couple of small bits and bobs to get done over the holidays, but we’ll be returning fully in January.
If anything urgent does crop up, we’ll still be keeping an eye on messages where possible.
