This handsome two storey terraced villa in Edinburgh had an outdated and unloved conservatory to the rear. The conservatory was virtually unusable; cold and draughty in the winter months and uncomfortably hot during the summer.
2B Architects proposed removing the conservatory and outshot and created a new south facing lounge, which the owners are able to enjoy all year round. Large format sliding doors provide direct and convenient access the patio and garden beyond.

Gaining Planning Permission for this roof extension to an upper flat in Edinburgh proved quite challenging. We withdrew the original application when we encountered, what we considered to be, unjustified resistance from the planners. The design was resubmitted, incorporating a Planning Statement provided by Marwick Planning which proved successful. The roof extension incorporates a much needed third bedroom for a growing family. A new ‘home working’ station is also inserted at the top of the stairs, illuminated by a new flat cupola.

An interesting article from Artisan Garden Design.

I’ve seen lots on social media recently about choosing colour schemes for our homes and it’s prompted me to write to a piece on colours in the garden.  Whether through plants, hard landscaping, or furniture and accessories colour can be used to create particular moods and can have a powerful in...

This is a proposal for an attic extension to a house in the Mountcastle area of Edinburgh.

Space is always at a premium in this type of project so a spiral stair is proposed, over the existing stair, to avoid losing space from any of the existing bedrooms.
The layout of the attic bedroom and ensuite takes full advantage of the available space; budgetary constraints resulted in Velux windows in preference to dormers and valuable storage space is formed out of the spaces either side of the staircase.

If you aren't sure how to make the best use of space in your house I would be happy to arrange a friendly chat to see how I can help.

I hope you are well and safe during this difficult time.

This week I have been ensuring current building projects are closed down safely and securely and doing everything I can to assist those clients who find themselves living with unfinished building work.

I am taking all steps necessary to continue to work safely on projects and as I have been working from a home office for a number of years now, self-isolation' has become a kind of norm for me. However, in compliance with government guidelines, I have ceased all face to face meetings and consultations in favour of digital (FaceTime) meetings.

I had a FaceTime meeting this morning with my client for the project pictured. This property is a ground floor flat in Joppa where the rear of the flat comprises a number of small rooms, which doesn't suit the owner's life style. 2B Architects proposal opens up this area into a more fluid, flexible space and creates views from the kitchen into a courtyard garden.

The FaceTime meeting was really productive and exceeded my expectations; I emailed the drawing in advance of the meeting to allow my client time to view the proposal. She commented that having the 'before and after' plans side by side was really helpful and the 3D views were a great visual aid.
So, another happy client - we move onto the next stage of the design process.

I realise this is going to be a very difficult time for a lot of people but it could also be an opportune time to think about planning for when we finally emerge from this crisis.

If you, or someone you know, is thinking about extending or remodelling their property but isn't sure how to go about it, then I would be happy to arrange a FaceTime consultation to see how I might help you with your particular problem.

In the meantime, please stay safe.

This is an end of terrace cottage, situated in a semi rural location near S.Queensferry, north west of Edinburgh. The current owners, desired an improved kitchen and new dining space.
2B Architects proposed remodelling their existing utility room and kitchen to integrate with a new dining room extension to the rear of the house.
The new glazed extension also connects the house to the garden.
