Weeks away from completion on this full house transformation in South Edinburgh by .

What started as a complete overhaul has evolved into a totally reimagined home. Works included an extension, attic conversion, full internal reconfiguration, and the creation of bright, open living spaces throughout.

From structure to layout, every part of this project has been carefully considered. Looking forward to sharing the finished result very soon.

Sun’s out (but it’s still Baltic 🥶) and the Spylaw shed is rising.

A big thank you to a local resident who was out flying their licensed drone this morning and kindly shared this footage with me.

You can really start to see the building taking shape now - the first floor is going in and it’s looking fantastic. Exciting times ahead!

This Edinburgh project has been quite a journey. What was once a dilapidated commercial unit sitting along the canal has now been transformed into a bright, modern two-bedroom home

The design makes the most of its unique setting, with an open, airy upper living space and beautiful views along the canal.

It wasn’t a straightforward path. With two planning refusals, persistence paid off. MDA Studio prepared the planning appeal, and the local planning committee ultimately overturned the recommendation for refusal. Planning was granted on appeal, allowing us to move forward with the project.

Having started back in 2023, we’re delighted to now see it complete. A challenging but incredibly rewarding transformation.

A little office update…

It’s been a busy few months behind the scenes getting everything ready, and it’s all starting to come together now.

You can really start to see the space taking shape, with everything coming into place and a few exciting bits arriving over the next week or so. Lighting will all be upgraded nearer the end of the refurbishment.

A big shoutout to .vivebyrob , who’s been working away in the background over the last number of weeks - long days from morning through to night to help bring the space to life.

Not long to go now until the doors open and we start welcoming you in.

Work is progressing well on site at Spylaw Shed . The excavation phase is now complete and we’re moving into the next stage, where the new structure begins to take shape within the existing stone walls.

Over the coming weeks the skeleton of the building will start to emerge, and the progress should become much more visible as the structure goes in.

I took this video earlier this morning during a rare spell of sunshine – a reminder of how quickly the weather can change at this time of year, but thankfully the work continues to move forward.

Spylaw Shed Update.

This project has taken a monumental amount of effort to get out of the ground. Solid bedrock was discovered, requiring to undertake extensive excavation before even thinking about foundations.

The project is now at a big milestone: reinforcement and underground drainage are in, and the concrete pour is scheduled for the end of this week. Once the foundations are complete, construction of the new timber frame and steelwork can begin. From that point on, progress will become much more visible.

A challenging start, but an exciting phase ahead.

A 3D snapshot produced to help our clients visualise their future kitchen / dining space.

These visual studies produced in house are a useful way to explore proportions, light and how a space might feel, long before construction begins.

If you’re considering a home renovation or extension and would like to work with an architect who can use visual tools like this to help you understand your project from the outset, feel free to get in touch or book a consultation.

With the new studio opening in South Edinburgh this spring, and an increasing workload, it is the right moment to bring someone new into the practice.

I’m looking for an experienced Architectural Technician / Technologist - someone who enjoys working across projects, dealing with people, getting out on site, and growing alongside a small, design-led studio.

This isn’t a desk-only role, and it’s not about being pigeonholed. It’s about responsibility, trust, and developing together as the practice grows.

If that resonates, details are on LinkedIn - or feel free to drop me an email directly.

Closing date: Friday 7 February.

As the year comes to a close, I’d like to thank all clients, contractors and consultants for their trust and support over the past year.

It’s been a very busy and productive year for MDA Studio, with a lot to be thankful for.

Looking ahead to 2026, we will be moving into the new studio space early in the year - an exciting step that will allow the practice to grow, evolve and offer a broader range of experiences.

I’m looking forward to the challenge of creating the studio in the New Year.

In the meantime, the space is being temporarily repurposed as Santa’s workshop - which seems only fair while we’re away.

Wishing everyone a restful Christmas and a happy Hogmanay. See you in 2026.

A really satisfying site visit today in South Edinburgh.

This project is a complete reconfiguration of the existing house, with a new extension and a full attic conversion. Today was the first time the clients properly experienced the upper floor as a complete space.

The scale of the bedrooms, the generosity of the bathroom, and the way the landings now work have completely transformed the house.

Great progress being made on site. Huge credit to for the quality and pace of work to date.

More to follow as the project continues to take shape.

Yesterday I picked up the keys for my new studio - a moment that’s been years in the making.

In many ways, it feels like coming full circle. My very first studio was in Colinton 14 years ago, and now MDA Studio is returning to the same street - this time with a dedicated studio space that gives the practice real presence and room to grow. If you had asked me 14 years ago where I wanted my office to be - it would be here.

I’ve walked past this unit for so many years, and to now be standing inside it with the keys in my hand is genuinely a pinch-me moment. Even in its raw state, the potential is incredible.

My home studio has served me brilliantly, and it will continue to play an important role. But having a studio just five minutes from the house opens up a whole new chapter - a space for new ideas, collaboration, client workshops, and social events. It also gives me the opportunity to expand the practice, increase the profile and bring new people into the journey in 2026.

As you enter the double height space - right in the centre will be a restored vintage plan chest with contemporary seating, acting as the heart of the room. It’s where light-touch meetings will happen - the kind of early, creative conversations that shape a project.

Around that, there’ll be a full height materials library where clients can have a coffee and explore materials including metal, render, timber, stone and various other samples, As you move up through the studio, the space will transition into a soft seating area, creating a calmer , private zone for reviewing drawings, talking through ideas, or stepping into 3D models together.

I’ve already had a few people around today, and it’s amazing how much character and possibility the space already holds. I’m glad they also thought the same! This will become the home of the practice - a place where clients will be welcomed, where ideas grow and for clients to feel inspired,

I’ve already picked up a few beautiful feature light fittings for the double height space and glazed entrance. Excited to share this transformation over the coming months.
