Right beside my new banner is another local business well worth knowing about!

The mechanic behind the banner next to mine is an absolutely brilliant mechanic. He’s someone I’m more than happy to recommend! knowledgeable, reliable, honest and genuinely good at what he does.

Always nice to see local businesses advertising side by side and supporting one another. 👌

So if your car or van needs some attention, give him a shout. you’ll be in good hands! 🔧🚗

And I must admit… the two banners look pretty good together! 😂

Two school closures in Scotland last week are a useful reminder of just how quickly a pest problem can become a business continuity problem.

🐀 Lumphanan Primary School in Aberdeenshire delayed reopening after the summer holidays when a rat infestation was discovered.

🐦 Capshard Primary School in Kirkcaldy was also forced to close, with press reports linking an issue with the school’s water supply to pigeon contamination.

Schools, universities and other buildings that have been quieter over the summer can provide pests with plenty of opportunities to establish. A planned inspection before staff, pupils or customers return can help identify activity, proofing issues and other risks before they cause serious disruption.

🐝 Another busy wasp nest dealt with today!

This one was tucked away underneath the guttering and soffit, making the entrance point particularly difficult to see.

The nest was certainly busy, with plenty of wasp activity around the entrance. Using the long lance allowed me to keep a safe distance from the nest while treating it, and my customer kindly helped me capture some footage from a safe position.

Another nest safely dealt with and another happy customer! 👍

If you’ve got wasps coming and going from your property, feel free to get in touch with Waterside Pest Solutions for advice or a quote.

🐿️ SQUIRREL PROBLEM? – IT’S NOT ALWAYS A QUICK FIX!

Another squirrel job recently completed for a customer, and this one was a good example of why squirrel control can sometimes take a little patience.

The customer had suspected squirrel activity within the roof space. Rather than repeatedly attending the property just to see whether anything was happening, I was able to install a remote monitoring camera to keep a close eye on the situation.

This meant I could monitor activity remotely, identify when the squirrel was using the area and make decisions based on what was actually happening, helping to keep unnecessary visits and costs down for the customer. 📷

Grey squirrels might look harmless, but once they get into a roof space they can cause some serious problems. They have constantly growing incisors and will gnaw on all sorts of materials, including:

🔨 Timber and roof structures
⚡ Electrical cables, potentially creating a fire risk
🏠 Insulation, which they can tear apart to make nests
💧 Pipes and other building materials
💩 They can also contaminate loft spaces with urine, droppings and nesting material.

And squirrel control isn’t necessarily a case of setting a trap and catching one the same day. Depending on the circumstances, it can take days or sometimes longer to establish exactly how many squirrels are present, understand their movements and achieve a successful result. There can also be young squirrels which is why rushing the process can create more problems.

🐿️ There is also a much bigger reason why grey squirrel control matters.

Grey squirrels are an invasive non-native species and are one of the biggest threats to our native red squirrels. They compete with red squirrels for food and habitat, but they can also carry squirrelpox, which is generally harmless to grey squirrels but can be fatal to red squirrels.

In fact, squirrelpox is considered one of the greatest threats to the future of red squirrels in Scotland.

⚖️ And there is an important legal point when it comes to trapping grey squirrels in Scotland.

Grey squirrels cannot simply be trapped and released somewhere else. It is an offence to release a grey squirrel into the wild, and there is no general provision allowing them to be captured, transported elsewhere and released.

This is why squirrel control needs to be carried out by someone who understands the relevant wildlife legislation and animal welfare requirements. It’s not simply a case of catching an animal and dropping it off somewhere else.

Every squirrel job is different, so I always assess the situation first and choose the most appropriate approach for the property, the customer and the circumstances.

🧹 Gutter Cleaning 🏡

Another gutter clean completed today at a lodge in Thurston Manor Holiday Park

The gutters weren’t overly bad this time, but they still had a good amount of debris and build-up that needed clearing out. Keeping gutters clean and free-flowing helps prevent blockages, overflowing and potential water damage.

Everything is done by hand when I clean guttering, this allows me to properly clear the gutters and make sure nothing is left behind.

Another job completed and the gutters left clean and clear! ✅

If your gutters are starting to fill up with leaves, moss or general debris, get in touch to arrange a clean.

🐝 Another wasp nest safely dealt with!

This one came through a recommendation from my good friend at Strathesk Roofing Felting Service, thanks very much for the referral, mate! Always good to work alongside and support other local businesses. 👊

The wasps were entering through a small hole in the soffit, making this a perfect job for my 8-metre Wasp Pole.

The long-reach lance allows me to keep a safe distance from the nest and the wasps, while still being able to accurately treat nests in awkward and elevated locations.

On this job, I was able to guide the lance up and into the small opening in the soffit, meaning there was no need for ladders and the treatment could be carried out safely from ground level.

Having the right equipment makes a huge difference when dealing with wasps in difficult-to-access areas. 🐝

Another job safely taken care of! ✅

A big thanks again to Strathesk Roofing Felting Service for the recommendation. If you need any roofing or felting work carried out, be sure to give them a shout too! 👍

🐿️ Another squirrel-proofing job completed in East Scotland 🏠🔧

This customer contacted us after discovering squirrels had gained access to their loft by chewing through the soffit.

Before carrying out any repairs, we dealt with the squirrel issue itself. We use remote cameras to monitor our traps, allowing us to keep a close eye on activity without making unnecessary visits. This helps keep costs down for the customer while also allowing us to monitor the traps regularly and respond quickly when needed.

Once the squirrel activity had been dealt with, we could get to work on securing the property.

🔨 The damaged soffit was repaired and reinforced with suitable mesh, preventing squirrels from simply chewing their way back in.

During our inspection, we also spotted another potential problem, a damaged and broken air vent. While it wasn’t the original reason for the visit, leaving it as it was could potentially lead to further problems, so we repaired this for the customer at the same time.

🐿️ A few things worth knowing about squirrels:

Squirrels are persistent and capable gnawers. Once they find a weakness in a building, they can enlarge an opening and use it repeatedly to gain access. Once inside a loft, they can cause damage to insulation and other building materials, and their activity can sometimes create much bigger repair bills if the problem is left unchecked.

Grey squirrels are also a non-native species in the UK and are widespread across the Scottish Lowlands. They are subject to specific wildlife-control and animal-welfare requirements, which is why responsible monitoring and appropriate control methods are so important.

Our remote trap-monitoring approach means we’re not simply putting traps down and leaving them unattended. We can monitor activity remotely and deal with captures promptly, making the process as responsible and welfare-conscious as possible. Remote monitoring is also an established approach used in wildlife management in Scotland.

✅ Squirrel issue dealt with
✅ Entry point identified
✅ Soffit repaired and reinforced
✅ Damaged vent repaired
✅ Future access prevented

The best pest control isn’t just removing the problem, it’s finding out how they got in and making sure they can’t get back in.

🪳 Cockroach problems often start without people realising, especially during holiday season when we’re travelling more, eating out more, and bringing luggage back and forth from hotels and apartments.

Cockroaches can be picked up from:
• Hotels & holiday accommodation
• Restaurants & takeaways
• Shared buildings & flats
• Second-hand appliances or furniture
• Delivery boxes and bags

Once inside a property, they spread quickly and are extremely difficult to control without professional treatment.

How to help prevent them:
✔️ Keep food sealed and surfaces clean
✔️ Don’t leave pet food out overnight
✔️ Empty bins regularly
✔️ Check luggage after travelling
✔️ Be cautious with second-hand electrical items and furniture
✔️ Seal gaps around pipes and skirting boards where possible

If you spot droppings, strange smells, egg cases or live cockroaches, don’t ignore it. Early treatment is always easier and more effective.

If you think you may have a cockroach issue, get in touch for advice, inspections and professional treatment. 📞
