Bomb Bay Jig – David Collins (DC) has done a magnificent job along with assistance from Peter Howell (PH) in developing the bomb bay layout and designing the jig on which the bomb bay and cockpit will be built and transported when complete. DC is a CAD specialist and his skills have been a great boon to the Project with PH supplying his previous research. DC and PH have had to work with limited Shorts drawings and material from crashed aircraft to determine the location of all the frame sections that separate each bay, their individual forms and how they are constructed.
DC commissioned a specialist in manufacturing steel structures, to build the jig to his design and had it delivered to the workshop on 19th March this year. Currently it’s in red primer but before use we will give it a coat of paint before starting the next phase of the Project. (Not sure whether it will be blue or green). The standard of workmanship in making the jig and how level the floor in the workshop is can be judged by an error of only 5 minutes (1/12 of a degree)!! Now the challenge is to build the bomb bay using this accuracy. When the time comes to move the fuselage we will fit transport wheels to the structure, the jig will also act as support for the completed fuselage when in it’s on display.
Bomb Bay Frames – Along with designing the jig, which gives the location of the bomb bay frames, DC has produced CAD files for all the bomb frames themselves that make up the bomb bay. There are 9 Bomb frames, comprising 27 frame sections of 15 individual designs. The full bomb bay on a complete aircraft having some 20 frames throughout its length. The blank frames were made by AMADA UK free of charge from CAD files supplied by DC. Sorin then delivered these in February.

Great news for the future of North Weald .

We are pleased to announce that we have received planning permission for our new airbase at North Weald!

The new building will give us security of tenure and will result in significant cost savings compared to leasing a new building built to the same specification.

We will make use of a one-off grant of £1.5 million that we received from the Government to help pay for the new airbase, which will cost around £4.5 million in total. Construction of the building will begin next year and is scheduled to be complete during Winter 2020.
