Following on from last week, here are the photos that show the difference made by adding two steel beams to knock out the internal walls of this semi. The transformation is dramatic, creating a space that is flexible and useful, all without adding an extension!

Sometimes an extension isn’t the right answer and it’s better use of the space that is needed. This semi had previously been poorly extended but had a jumble of spaces that served as a kitchen and dining room. Adding a couple of steel beams allowed us to take out the internal walls and locating the utility in the middle allowed the kitchen and dining spaces to make the most of the light.

A living space that opens directly to the garden.
Viewed from the rear garden, the vaulted living room connects to the patio through large sliding doors, allowing the house to open fully to the outside. The patio is set flush with the internal floor level — an important detail that helps blur the boundary between inside and out.

Is it new or old, or a bit of both? Reclaimed materials can be a great way for a new building to integrate and feel like it’s always been there. Thanks to for the fantastic photo of our project.

After 4 years in practice we are trying to get more photos of our completed projects. Here is one from a new build replacement to an old bungalow. The house is a kit build, highly insulated with an air source heat pump, ventilation system that has heat recovery and a good area of PV. Far exceeding Building Regulations energy requirements - if only more new build houses were built to a similar standard!

We’re back from leave and started off with a visit to one of our (nearly) completed projects near Okehampton. The clients have managed the works themselves, even getting their hands dirty on the tools! For this 200+ year old farmhouse we put together the technical design for a large rear extension and retrofit to the existing house. It included internal wall insulation to the solid stone walls, an ashp, pv, battery, and an mvhr ventilation system. The finished house blends a wealth of character and historic features with sensitive building work and carefully selected modern technology to provide a charming, warm and comfortable home. We will catch up with them after the winter to check on how the building has performed.
