Childs Sulzmann Architects are proud to announce that one of our team has won an extraordinary opportunity. Jacob Long who is a key member of our conservation team, has been nominated a SPAB scholar.

Each year the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings selects a small number of talented craftspeople, architects, surveyors and engineers for their prestigious training scheme. The SPAB Scholars and Fellows for 2022 have just been announced and we could not be more delighted to hear that Jacob Long has been selected as one of just four.

Over the next nine months these selected few will gain hands-on experience of building conservation, travelling across the country to learn from building specialists and craftspeople working in traditional ways. Former Scholars and Fellows are among today’s leading UK conservation experts, caring for many of the most significant buildings in the UK.

Jacob has just completed the second phase of the refurbishment of Thornbury Castle in Gloucestershire. He worked closely with Historic England and specialist craftspeople to restore the fabric of the building, including stonework, leadwork and exceptional timber panelling.

We’re not converting Stourhead – Palladian house, landscape garden, and one of the finest country houses in England. But we are converting part of the stable block for holiday accommodation. We are delighted to be working with the National Trust on this exceptional property.

French Chateau to Luxury Spa...

An international operator of luxury hotels called to ask if Nick Childs would be prepared to go to Paris to look at a Chateau they are thinking of acquiring. So, having sorted out Covid paperwork (not to be underestimated) he boarded the Eurostar for a first foray out of the country for some time.

The chateau, just outside Paris, is magnificent and hardly changed in a hundred years. The family who have lived there for generations showed me round. They are sad to be leaving – but we are excited to have the opportunity to convert this gorgeous pile to a luxury hotel and spa.

Remembering a past project - New Park Manor is a charming historic brick building, located within the New Forest. Originally a seventeenth century hunting lodge, it was first converted to a hotel in the 1960's, when Childs Sulzmann Architects first obtained planning consent to develop and convert the building into a 29 room luxury family hotel.

Since then, CS have successfully added a further 6 bedroom suites, above the existing spa, and also introduced a 60 seat 'Vinery' restaurant space which provides exceptional views across the grounds to the New Forest.

The Long Mynd is a moorland plateau that forms part of the Shropshire Hills – an Area of Outstanding natural beauty.

The Longmynd Hotel dates from the early 1900s and originally attracted Edwardian visitors to the 'Little Switzerland' of Church Stretton.

We are very pleased to have been selected by the owners, HF Holidays, to refurbish this iconic property. HFH have been operating walking holidays and special interest breaks since 1913.

The brief is to reconfigure the restaurant and bar to take advantage of the fabulous location, to refurbish the public areas to better meet market expectations and to refresh the 54 guest rooms.

The detailed designs will be developed over the Spring, and tendered in the Summer, for the work to be done next Winter.

We are delighted to be working with project managers and cost consultants V12 Project & Cost Management QODA Consulting and RiskWise, Safety Consulting and Programs.

The Parthenon Frieze is being cleaned as part of this project!

How often can you say that as an architect?

As part of the refurbishment of the galleries at the Royal West of England Academy (Bristol) the plaster cast replica of the famous Athenian frieze is being restored. Expert conservationists from International Fine Art Conservation Studios IFACS based in Bristol, are painstakingly removing years of grime to reveal this unique feature of the Sharples Gallery.

Work is due for completion in the Spring.

We are delighted to be working with Exeter City Living and Exeter City Council on this ninety-two home development, which will be known as The Gardens, Whipton.

Plans to redevelop the site were approved by Exeter City Council in February 2020. The development will provide sixty affordable homes and thirty-two for market rent. These will all be owned and managed by Exeter City Council.

‘All of these new homes will be built to the Passivhaus standard, meaning that homes need up to 90% less energy to heat. The homes are created to be healthier and more comfortable; where heat regulation costs are reduced and where climate emergency and fuel poverty are tackled head on.’ says Emma Osmundsen Managing Director of ECL.

New images of the completed latest phase of refurbishment of Thornbury Castle Hotel by Childs Sulzmann Architects.

Thornbury Castle is once again restored to its full glory. After two years on site, and all the complexities of working through Covid, phase two of the refurbishment is complete.

The rooms and the food are receiving rave reviews!
