Architecture at its best should invite absolutely everyone in. We are thrilled to share that our design for the National Trust’s Castle Drogo Visitor Centre extension has officially received planning permission!

The extension connects to the current Visitor Reception Building, sitting at the gateway to Grade I listed Edwin Lutyens Castle.

Our vision was to create a building that sits quietly within its historic, natural setting, using vertical timber and a green roof to blend effortlessly into the landscape. But the most important part of this design is inside: the inclusion of a fully accessible, state-of-the-art Changing Places facility.

It will be the first of its kind for the trust, ensuring this beautiful part of the South West is truly open to all. We are incredibly proud of the inclusive space we’ve designed. In addition to the changing place it provides a multi-purpose accessible event space and creates a sheltered external courtyard.

Coming home should feel like a long, slow exhale. At Lyme Bay View, we intentionally widened the entrance corridors to create an immediate sense of breathing space the moment you step through the door. Rather than a narrow, dark hallway, you are greeted by an expansive, light-filled volume that deliberately guides your eye straight through the living space and out toward the beach. It’s about human-centric design, crafting that perfect, grounding moment of arrival instantly connecting you to your home.

When architecture and interior design speak exactly the same language, a house truly becomes a sanctuary. For our shortlisted Lyme Bay View project, we had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with the incredibly talented interior and landscape designer, Clare Shaw. Her brilliant eye for colour, perfectly captured in these warm terracotta tones, and tactile finishes flawlessly complements the architectural volume and natural light we introduced. It is this seamless, shared vision that elevates a home to award-worthy status. We are so excited to find out the judges' final decision soon! Fingers crossed

"We want a garden that feels like a true destination in the summer." As the weather finally begins to warm up in the UK, the importance of a well-considered outdoor space becomes undeniable. In these recent design renders, we worked to create a fully integrated outdoor kitchen that works just as beautifully at midday as it does at midnight. By collaborating on these specific lifestyle details early in the design process, we ensure that when summer arrives, our clients have a high-end, holistic space perfectly equipped for how they want to live and entertain.

The kitchen is no longer just a place to cook; it is the beating heart of the home. For Lyme Bay View, we wanted to design a kitchen that truly breathes. By vaulting the ceiling and introducing expansive skylights, we flooded the room with natural light, creating a bright, uplifting environment from morning until dusk. The generous island and open layout effortlessly support a spacious, relaxed lifestyle, whether you are hosting friends or enjoying a quiet Sunday coffee. Ultimately, it is about creating exquisite buildings that people love to be in.

"We need a space to work, but we don't want to dedicate a whole room to an office."

We love finding elegant solutions to our clients' daily routines. By engaging clients as active participants in the design and build process, we tucked this custom workspace neatly beneath the crafted timber staircase at Lyme Bay View. It is incredibly rewarding when clients feel that Barc didn't just design a beautiful home, they thought of practical details I would never have considered. Delivering a luxury experience that exceeds expectations and is tailored to the preferences, needs, and lifestyle of our clients.

Anticipating the warmer months. A seamless transition between the interior and the landscape completely transforms how a home is experienced. At Lyme Bay View, the architecture steps gracefully down into the garden, creating a dedicated outdoor room perfectly positioned to capture the sun. Refined, inviting, and deeply connected to nature.

We designed this bespoke plywood window seat to act as a dedicated moment of calm within the bedroom. It is a quiet nook specifically tailored to fit the individual, a place to retreat, read, and simply take in the view. This is what we mean by human-centric design: creating exquisite spaces that invite you to slow down and truly enjoy the lifestyle you envisioned.
