When we designed this roof window over the stairwell, the aim was primarily to bring more natural daylight into the heart of the house.
However, in the recent heatwaves, the roof window has provided a much valued secondary purpose. It enables the house owners to use passive stack ventilation to draw cooler air from outside at ground floor level and then the warmer air rises and vents through the roof.
The air movement draws warm air from every room in the house and cools the whole building without the need for air conditioning or even electric fans.
This is a design feature that we think is likely to be come more popular as our climate changes and heatwaves become more frequent.
