Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sadie Cousins, a Year 10 student from Exmouth Community College, to Devon Contractors for her work experience placement.
Keeping things in the family, Sadie spent the week alongside her aunt, Zoe Coates, our Office Manager, and her great-uncle, Shaun Bennington, our Company Secretary, gaining a real insight into life within the construction industry.
During the week, Sadie experienced a wide variety of tasks across the business, from processing orders, answering the telephone and filing, to helping with updates to our website.
She also spent time out on site visiting our University of Exeter Harrison Works project, capturing progress photographs for our marketing team.
📸 Great photos, Sadie!
Before she finished her placement, we asked Sadie to reflect on her week...
What made you choose Devon Contractors for your work experience placement?
"My aunt Zoe works here and she has said very positive things about the place."
What was your favourite part of the week?
"I really enjoyed going out on site to take pictures and looking at all of the building taking place."
What new skills or knowledge have you learnt?
"I have learnt a lot about all the small details needed to successfully build and create an establishment."
What surprised you most about the construction industry?
"I found out that a lot of time and effort goes into building and it isn’t just a case of getting the materials and doing the creation straight away."
Has this week changed how you think about a career in construction?
"Yes, it has. At first I thought the construction industry consisted of just the physical building aspect, but now I know there is much more to it. I would highly recommend work experience at Devon Contractors – the details are all very interesting, the staff are very nice and I have learnt so much new knowledge."
Describe your week in just three words...
Welcoming. Adaptable. Concentrated.
Our Managing Director, Nigel Whelan, said:
"Providing work experience opportunities is incredibly important to us. The construction industry offers so many different career paths, and giving young people the opportunity to experience both the office and site environment helps them understand the wide range of skills involved in delivering successful projects. As a proud South West business, we're passionate about inspiring the next generation to consider careers in construction, and it makes this placement even more special knowing Sadie is continuing a family connection that has been part of Devon Contractors for many years."
Well done, Sadie! It has been an absolute pleasure having you with us this week, and we wish you every success with your studies and whatever career path you choose in the future.
