Myth vs Fact 🔥

MYTH: Installing an EPDM roof means using flames or hot welding equipment.
FACT: RubberCover EPDM is a cold-applied roofing system.

The membrane is bonded using the appropriate QuickBond adhesive, while primers and EPDM tapes are used for details such as seams, penetrations and flashing.
That means there’s no need for the hot works associated with some other flat roofing systems.

You still need correct preparation and installation technique, of course, but if the thought of introducing rubber roofing means picturing burners and hot welding gear, you can cross that one off the list.

Short of something for tomorrow? 🚚

We know how it goes. You’re loading up for the next job and suddenly realise you’re a tub of adhesive short. Or you get on-site and find you need another length of trim or a tape you hadn’t allowed for.

Plytech holds strong stock levels across RubberCover, QuickTrim, QuickBond, tapes, primers and associated accessories.

Order stocked EPDM products before 12 noon and we can get them out for next-day UK delivery.

If something’s urgent, give us a call rather than sitting there wondering. We’ll tell you what’s on the shelf and how quickly we can get it moving.

Roofers, we want your top tip 🔨

Before that EPDM membrane even comes out of the packaging, what’s the one thing you always check?

Maybe you double-check the deck. Maybe it’s the weather. Perhaps you lay every tool and product out first because you’ve learned the hard way what happens when you don’t.

We want the little preparation tips that come from actually doing the job.
Send yours to the Plytech team or pop it in the comments. We’ll share some of the best ones and give you or your business a shout-out when we do.

Sometimes five minutes of good preparation saves an hour of grief later.

FAQ Friday: Can I install EPDM straight over an old asphalt or shingle roof?

This is one where the answer is no, not directly.

Installing EPDM over old smooth-surface asphalt or shingles isn’t recommended as the bitumen minerals in these products will bleed and deteriorate the rubber over time.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the whole project has to stop.

The correct approach is normally to install a suitable retrofit or board over the existing surface first, creating an appropriate substrate for the EPDM system.

Existing roof build-ups can vary, so if you’re looking at an overlay project and aren’t sure how to approach it, speak to the Plytech technical team before you start.

Still thinking about booking EPDM training?

A quick reminder that our October Approved Installer Training dates are:

📅 Tuesday 20th October

If EPDM jobs are starting to crop up more regularly, proper hands-on training can save a lot of head scratching when you meet your first awkward corner, pipe detail or membrane join.

We work through those details on the training rigs, alongside membrane preparation, adhesives and QuickTrim, so you can actually practice them rather than just watch a demonstration.

Places are limited, so if you’ve been meaning to book, give the Plytech team a call.

Got more than one installer who needs training?

Getting a whole team away from work for training isn’t always easy, particularly when diaries are already full.

If you’ve got a group of installers who need EPDM training, have a chat with us about on-site training.

Rather than sending everyone individually to Exeter, we may be able to arrange training for your team together, making it easier to get everyone working from the same installation methods and product knowledge.

It’s particularly useful for roofing firms looking to add EPDM to their services or businesses bringing several new installers up to speed at the same time.
Speak to the Plytech team and we can talk through what you need.

It’s usually the small stuff that stops a job

You’ve got the membrane. You’ve got the trims. Then halfway through the job you realise you’re missing the primer, the right tape, a roller or the fixings you need to finish a detail.

Plytech supplies the ancillary products needed to complete a flat roof installation too, including EPDM glues, adhesives and mastics, tapes and primers, trade tools, essential fixings.

So when you’re putting an order together, you can get the whole job sorted in one place rather than chasing the missing bits afterwards.

Not sure what you need? Send us the roof details and ask the team.

A cheap trim can become an expensive problem

It’s easy to look at two roof edge trims and assume there isn’t much between them. But the details matter once they’re fitted and exposed to British weather year after year.

QuickTrim has been around since 1999 and was designed specifically to make flat roof edge detailing quicker and more reliable.

It’s UV and weather resistant, won’t rust, uses purpose-made components and has solid corners with pre-installed foam rather than relying purely on clip-style corner details.

It’s also supplied fully fabricated with the pins and clips needed for installation.
Saving a few pounds on the edge of a roof makes little sense if it creates extra fitting time or problems later.

When the weather gives you a window, you need the materials ready
October can be one of those months where you’re keeping one eye on the job and the other on the forecast.

So when you’ve got a good day to get a flat roof done, the last thing you need is to discover the membrane, adhesive or trim isn’t available.

We hold strong stocks of RubberCover, QuickTrim, QuickBond and the associated accessories here at Plytech.

You can also order job by job, have membrane cut to suit the project and arrange delivery directly to site, so you don’t need to tie money up holding loads of stock yourself.

Got work coming up? Send us the measurements and we’ll help get it sorted.
