Saw this beautiful Tawny owl at work today. We thought it odd to see it in daylight, motionless, eyes closed, didn’t mind that we were very close. We thought it was ill or injured and looked like it had an injured wing. Off we went to get a box with the intention of contacting an owl sanctuary. As we approached the owl again, it opened its eyes, looked at us and effortlessly flew off with perfect flight.
Obviously we were delighted, and thankful we didn’t put it in a box, but also a bit confused.
Turns out, young Tawny owls can let their wings hang loose behind their backs and just relax and sunbathe to get vitamin D 💕. Thank goodness we didn’t put it in a box.
This information might be helpful to anyone finding themselves in a similar situation

This beautiful clematis! It’s planted at the base of a Sorbus - a mountain ash which died off and was chain-sawed down to a stump. The poor clematis never really grew well. Maybe producing one flower and perhaps reaching around 60cm. I actually thought it had died. I’m guessing with the tree gone, the roots may have gotten too warm with direct sunlight? Anyway, the mountain ash starting growing again (very quickly) from the base and is now a perfect host for the clematis to climb. This is the most amount of flowers of seen on it and it’s probably around 1.5 metres high. What a stunning flower it has, almost Dahlia like.
I think it may be Clematis Franziska Maria? I think I remember a label years ago

First time I’ve ever seems bees mating! The courtship lasted an impressively long time 😁. Are they Carder bees? If so isn’t it early for them mating in May? And does the male die after the courtship??

Lupins! And they’ve not been eaten by slugs or aphids…..yet (plenty of aphids around at the moment). Be aware that lupins are toxic to pets. Our dog ate one when she was little. She was fine but I think she was tripping her nut off 😬

The size of this peony flower 😍. This is a tree peony which flowers before the herbaceous peony. Despite the name, it’s not actually a tree but a woody perennial. It stands around 6’? It doesn’t flower very long, but once the blooms are over, the plant still provides structural interest in the garden, especially when the foliage turns from green to bronze/purple in autumn

Darmera peltata giving us a lovely display along the stream bank. It flowers on tall stems which will then be followed by large, almost rhubarb-like glossy green leaves. The leaves then turn red for autumn……pretty much year round interest 👌
