30 sqm of turf laid in a Topsham garden yesterday! With rain on the way, it shouldn't need masses of watering while it establishes 🤞

However, if needed, a hosepipe can be used to water the turf; there is an exception on the hosepipe ban for watering new turf for up to 28 days.

Rain is forecast in our region this week, and for most of us, this means our lawns will start to show signs of recovery.

But it’s important not to reach for the mower too early, even if you have patches of dastardly weeds that you can’t wait to level! Instead, wait for substantial green growth. This can take up to 14 days after rainfall starts.

Once your lawn is ready to mow, keep the blades high for a couple of cuts and leave small clippings to help retain the moisture.

Once the lawn is looking healthier, check for any permanent damage which may need to be returfed. Autumn’s cooler temperatures and regular rainfall is ideal for returfing. But do wait and see before ordering, as lawns can be surprisingly resilient!

Friday comment.

Our sector is talking about the challenges facing turf growers during the current prolonged dry spell.

For turf growers, the prolonged lack of rainfall and extreme temperatures have meant sharply higher irrigation costs, crop damage, increased waste and lengthy recovery programmes.

We have been able to irrigate our fields, and we're pleased, of course, to see rain in the forecast ahead. But for all growers there are longer term issues to consider.

How can customers help? The Turfgrass Growers Association is encouraging customers to work more closely with growers and plan requirements as early as possible, particularly where significant volumes are required.

It's worth reading the full statement (link in comments in the original post) for the full story.

Have a lovely (cooler) weekend.

This evening we'll be experiencing a solar eclipse here in Devon!

🌘 Eclipse starts at around 6:18 pm depending on your location

🌑 The maximum eclipse (should be around 90% in Devon) will be approx 7:15 pm

🌕 Eclipse finishes just after 8:00 pm

Remember not to look directly at the sun during any stage of the eclipse - unless you have certified solar viewing glasses.

A message from the team. During the unprecedented hot weather we are doing things a little differently:

1️⃣ We only cut turf on the day of delivery so loading in the morning does take a bit longer. And this limits how much we can get to sites early in the day. So please do contact us early to plan your order.

2️⃣ Turf is best placed in shade if possible. Covering with a tarpaulin to shield from the sun doesn’t really work and is likely to heat the turf further.

3️⃣ We try to avoid relying on M5, A30 and A38 on Fridays at this time of year as traffic volume and incidents can cause serious delays (and there seem to be more than ever!)

Hope you're managing to stay cool. Have a great weekend!

Crispy lawn alert!

During prolonged periods of hot, dry weather, grass naturally goes dormant as a survival mechanism. While the lawn may turn brown and appear lifeless, the roots usually remain alive, waiting for cooler temperatures and rainfall to kick-start growth again.

The biggest mistake? Trying to force a lawn through a drought. Instead, it's better to work with nature.
