Another amazing project over the line at Paignton Zoo.

The brief was a unique one: create a Savannah feeding area that looked as though it had always been part of the landscape—old in character, yet grand in presence.

Crafted from Robinia poles and planks, with sweet chestnut purlins, every piece of timber was carefully selected and worked to celebrate its natural shape and character.

The sweeping curves, waney-edge boarding and traditional detailing give the structure a timeless appearance, while its scale provides a striking focal point within the exhibit.

Finished with a reclaimed corrugated roof, the shelter has the weathered, authentic feel the client envisioned, blending naturally into its surroundings while providing a practical feeding area for the zoo's savannah animals.

Projects like this are what we love most—working closely with our clients to turn a vision into something that feels both functional and full of character.

A huge thank you to Paignton Zoo for trusting us with such a special project. We're delighted with the finished result and can't wait to see it become part of the animals' daily routine.

It’s been a busy few weeks at the zoo making these viewing areas and animal shelters in the enclosure ready for the arrival of its new occupants. Materials range from robinia, Douglas fir and live edge larch. It may look rough and ready but that was the instruction from the zoo owners and we certainly achieved the brief. Every cut, rebate and sand has been done meticulously to give it the appearance of ease and rusticness!
