INVESTIGATION BEFORE INTERVENTION
Sometimes the most important part of the job is finding out what you’re actually dealing with.
While exposing the lower levels of this Grade II listed 16th-century building, our aim was to remove inappropriate materials and allow the original fabric to breathe again.
During the investigation, we uncovered something nobody knew was there — a cellar beneath the original part of the house, unrecorded in the listing information.
Historic buildings rarely tell you their whole story from the surface.
Understanding how they were built, how they’ve been altered and how the materials are behaving has to come before deciding how they should be repaired.
Sometimes, you have to uncover the past before you can work out the right way forward.
