This piece is dedicated to the Long Range Desert Group...which operated behind enemy lines for a 5 year period before being disbanded at the end of the war. They heavily assisted the SAS....earning the name.."The Libyan Desert Taxi Service"

Their logo is a scorpion within a wheel....above the 4 letters....surrounding the logo is weathered writing in a period Army font....all done on an upcycled whisky barrel end.

This piece had very particular requests....listing the places the recipient worked for the company around the edge....the office in the centre....with a beautiful silver Mini and registration plate sitting in front of it....and a sunset in the background.

The 3rd lid that will be taken to the Victory Show in Leicestershire is the largest lids that I have ever done. A monster of a Hogshead lid...and nearly 1m in diameter..this piece is dedicated to the famous 617 Squadron....or The Dambusters as they are more commonly known.

Displayed is an image of a Lancaster Bomber dropping one of Barnes Wallis's bouncing bombs while under heavy fire and taking damage.

I am extremely proud of how this one came out....trying to keep as much detail as possible on porous wood is definitely a challenge.

The second lid is similar to the first...but with two noticeable differences. The winged dagger has a much cleaner appearance to match the lid that it is burnt on to...and below it sits the iconic sand coloured beret on a bed of poppies. All work...burning and painting as done by hand...with clear varnish added to protect it. A French Cleat is added to the rear to aid hanging.

This is the first of 3 posts today....showcasing 3 different lids that have been handed over to my good friend ....a keen WW2 enthusiast & previous customer of SmokeEater_Art.....all 3 lids will be taken down South later in the year to The Victory Show & will hopefully find new homes while there.

The first lid shows the SAS winged dagger on a distressed whisky barrel end. I like to keep aging on my lids...it took a lot of time to get that way & would be a shame to sand it bare..destroying it's history.
