This week I have had the pleasure of bringing this beautiful handmade Chesterfield sofa back to its former glory. It had suffered surface damage from a life in a humid climate overseas, particularly on the seating cushions. The whole sofa had been deep cleaned and treated, and both seating cushions have had the surface damage repaired, the colours matched and blended back in.

The matching sofas for the armchair I did on Friday have really come back to life after a deep clean, colour refresh, and a revitalising finish coat.

Haven't done a before and after in a while, so here is one from today. A patch of coating had started peeling and the hide behind got contaminated casing further peeling. Got it all cleaned up, sealed and smoothed out, colour matched and all blended in.

That took quite a bit of detailed restoration and repair work, but finally the 1953 Bentley R-Type rear bench seat restoration is complete. The headlines of what has been done are:-
1. Thoroughly cleaned
2. All old coatings stripped off
3. Repeated application of revival treatments to get the hide supply again
4. Re-stitched by hand all split seams
5. Extensive repair work to the damaged surfaces, but leaving some character.
6. Matching and making the colour, then applying and sealing with satin lacquer finish.

Leather Biodegradability: Another Reason to Embrace Leather

We often hear about massive floating "islands" of plastic polluting our oceans. But have you ever wondered why leather is never part of that conversation?

One possible explanation: leather is a natural, biodegradable material. Unlike plastic, which lingers in the environment for centuries, leather naturally breaks down at the end of its life.

When produced using natural or biobased tanning agents and biodegradable additives, leather can decompose in industrial composting in as little as 20 days (as highlighted in Karl Flowers’ article, “Opportunities at Leather’s End-of-Life,” ILM, Sep-Oct 2024). That’s a timeframe comparable to vegetable waste, which takes 5–30 days!

Let’s be clear: all materials eventually biodegrade, but what sets leather apart is its ability to decompose quickly (20–60 days) and safely for the environment, transforming—under the right conditions—into compost that enriches the soil with vital nutrients.

This unique feature makes leather not only a valuable part of the circular economy, but also one of the most sustainable fashion materials.

And that’s just one of many reasons to choose leather!

Biodegradability refers to the process by which organic materials are broken down by microorganisms into simpler components like carbon dioxide, water, and ammonia.

Compostability, a measure of biodegradation, refers to the ability of a material to break down into biomass without releasing harmful or toxic substances—provided it does not contain hazardous components that persist after decomposition.
Any leather can be composted but the speed of degradation and environmental impact depends on the tanning chemistry used.

Producing fully biodegradable leather requires advanced technological solutions, and the industry is making incredible strides in this area. But even conventionally produced European leather demonstrates the ability to decompose naturally, and here are the studies to back it up.

The 1953 Bentley rear seat has had it's surface coating stripped off. This has allowed the use of a lot of revival treatment to get the hide back to supple. Now that it is supple the repairs can begin, starting with re-stitching the burst seams of which there are several. The next step for this seat will be to repair the damaged surface (cracks and splits), ready for a new colour coating and lacquer.

This months workshop project. I have been entrusted with restoring the interior from a gorgeous classic, a 1953 Bentley R Type. This interior has seen some previous restoration work but this was sometime ago and not the best quality. I'll be stripping back the coatings, treating the Leather to get it supple and healthy again, then I'll start making sympethic repairs, and finally recolouring.
The aim here is to keep as much of the originality and character as possible whilst reinstating the luxury feel and look.

Perfectly functional and comfortable 15yr old electric recliner that the owner wanted to use in their new 'snug' room but it was looking a bit too scruffy. They asked me to have a look and see if I could restore it for them.
