Could you qualify for free solar panels, a battery, insulation or high-retention storage heaters through the Warmer Homes Local Grant?

This is a government-backed scheme for eligible private homeowners and privately rented homes, mainly based on postcode area, EPC rating, household income or certain benefits.

You may qualify if:

Your postcode is in an eligible LSOA area
Your home has an EPC rating of D or below
Your household income is under £36,000
Or you receive certain qualifying benefits

The grant can potentially cover solar panels, a battery, loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, high-retention storage heaters and more.

It’s a legitimate scheme, using properly registered installers, MCS-accredited equipment and insurance-backed guarantees.

Octopus Zero Bills is worth knowing about if you’re already looking at solar.

The idea is that your home uses a mix of solar panels, a battery and, in many cases, a heat pump. Octopus then helps manage that tech so your home can use, store and share energy more efficiently. For qualifying homes, Octopus says residents pay nothing for the energy their home uses, with no standing charge, for at least 5 years and usually up to 10 years, subject to fair use. ([Octopus Energy][1])

The main pros are clear:

No electricity tariff
No standing charge
More protection from rising energy prices
A home powered by cleaner tech
Better use of solar and battery storage
Potentially lower running costs for years

For retrofits, the offer can mean up to 5 years of no electricity bills. For eligible new builds, it can be 10 years. You do still need to pay for the system itself, and your home has to qualify, so the first step is checking your postcode on the Octopus Zero Bills register.

It won’t suit every home, especially if your usage is unusually high, and you may not be able to benefit from Smart Export Guarantee payments in the same way. But if you’re already planning solar, it’s definitely something to check before you commit.

Solar panels are built to last.

Most modern systems keep generating electricity for 25–30 years or more, with only gradual efficiency loss over time. In many cases, the inverter gets replaced before the panels themselves.

There’s no fixed number of solar panels every home needs.

It depends on your electricity usage, roof space, roof direction, and whether you plan to add battery storage. Most UK homes install somewhere between 8 and 14 panels, with around 10 panels being common for a typical 3-bedroom home.

One of the biggest myths about solar in the UK is that it only works in strong sunshine.

Solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy days because they use daylight, not heat. Modern systems can still make a real difference to electricity bills across the year.

“Are solar panels worth it in the UK?
Well the answer is yes.” ☀️

With electricity prices changing constantly, generating your own power gives you more control over your bills. Even in the UK, a good solar setup can cover daytime usage, work alongside battery storage, and cut how much you rely on the grid.

They went from £182.81 to £8 a month.

8 panels, a battery and a heat pump cut over £100 off their monthly bill and even built up credit.

Most of their energy now comes from the roof, with extra sent back to the grid.

If your roof gets good sunlight, this kind of drop is achievable.
