As it is National Dog Day on 26th August, I thought I should celebrate those four-footed friends that have helped me during residential building surveys this year. Whether that’s by checking who is at the door when they hear me knocking on the internal walls, guarding inspecting chamber covers I need to lift, wanting a friend to play with, pretending to be a rug or just chilling out..

We use a carbon fibre telescopic pole, fitted with a remotely controlled GoPro camera, to get a bird's eye view of chimney stacks and roof coverings.

Unlike a drone, this means hi-res photos used in our RICS Building Survey reports can be taken regardless of the weather conditions.

On 13th May 2020, the Government updated its advice on home moving during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. This guidance applies to people in England moving between private residential homes.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/government-advice-on-home-moving-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-outbreak

The amended regulations make it clear that people who wish to move home can do so and that surveys can be undertaken of the property you wish to purchase. However, this is subject to adhering to current social distancing guidelines to ensure the health and safety of the occupiers of the property and the surveyor.

We appreciate that this is a difficult time for everyone and want to ensure that any building survey is carried out in accordance with the latest guidelines for the safety of both the occupants and the surveyor. We have therefore prepared an information sheet and checklist to outline how the risk of infection can be minimised.

Please visit www.dba.co.uk/covid19 for more information.

This guidance applies to people moving into homes in the private or social sector.

DURING THE CURRENT LOCKDOWN WE ARE SUSPENDING ALL RESIDENTIAL BUILDING SURVEYS

The RICS is recommending that the latest government advice regarding house moves and surveys is followed, which can be found here:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/government-advice-on-home-moving-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-outbreak

"Surveyors should not expect to carry out non-urgent surveys in homes where people are in residence, and no inspections should take place if any person in the property is showing symptoms, self-isolating or being shielded."

Yesterday I inspected a property in Bracknell. At first I was a bit concerned about the wiring of the RCD Consumer unit and close proximity of the gas meter and pipework under the stairs….

Then I thought, why are there even gas and electric meters under the stairs - when the gas and electric meter cupboards are outside by the front door?
