Looking for fish for a smaller garden pond?

Koi are often the first fish people think of when planning a garden pond, but Shubunkins and Sarasa Comets are attractive alternatives, which require considerably less space.

These beautifully coloured, hardy goldfish can grow to around 30–35cm, and with a lifespan of 10-15 years are well suited to life in smaller, well-maintained ponds. They are also less likely to disturb your pond plants than koi.

If you are thinking about introducing fish to an existing pond, or planning a new pond for your garden please get in touch, we’ll be happy to help.

🟢 Why is my pond turning green? 🟢

If recently you’ve noticed green scum at the edges of your pond or a green hue to the water then it’s probably due to a build up of algae, likely caused by the warm weather and high levels of sunshine. ☀️

Though the algae may disappear by itself as autumn arrives, it’s wise to manage it, as high levels can devastate a wildlife pond.

Not only is algae ugly, more worryingly it can suffocate the water, block sunlight from reaching submerged plants and trap small creatures such as newts, froglets, beetles or small fish. 🐸🐟

If you would like to know how to safely clear summer blanketweed and protect your garden's ecosystem, then read our full step-by-step guide here: https://www.broadleyaquatics.co.uk/2023/06/12/controlling-pond-algae/

Prefer to leave your pond clean to the experts? Then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Send us a message or call today!

It was our pleasure to take on the rebuild of Eltham Crematorium's large ornamental koi pond last year.
We recently returned for routine maintenance and were pleased to see how well everything had settled.
Such a beautiful, meaningful space for reflection 🐚💧

Hosepipe Ban – what it means for your pond 💧

Southern Water will be bringing a hosepipe ban into effect across Hampshire from Friday 10th July. While we know this means watering our gardens with a hosepipe will be off-limits, we wanted to update you on your rights to top up your pond.

According to Southern Water, an exemption applies to hosepipe use if it is required for the welfare of fish or aquatic animals, or for filling and maintaining a domestic pond.

Pond levels can drop considerably in hot weather. If you are topping up your pond, it is always best to use harvested rainwater. If this is not possible and you must use tap water, we highly advise dechlorinating it first using a wildlife-safe liquid treatment or an in-line filter cartridge fitted to your hose to protect sensitive aquatic life.

Please note: currently, there is no formal hosepipe ban planned for South East Water areas across Surrey. However, they are operating under a voluntary Amber/Red water alert, so please continue to reduce water usage wherever possible!

You don’t need a great deal of space to create a thriving habitat for wildlife in your garden.

Our client wanted a small, natural pond with cascading rockery waterfall, nestled between their existing garden borders. So, we designed a feature to blend seamlessly into the landscape. Here's our original design alongside the finished build!

It was a real pleasure to spend the day teaching students at RHS Garden Wisley yesterday. Providing my insights on everything aquatics as part of their L4 diploma.
Thank you all for having me and wishing you the best in your upcoming exams!

It’s always nice to receive photos from our clients, sharing updates on past pond builds. 📷

Ponds look great when they’re newly installed, but they look even better once they’ve fully settled into their landscape.

We built this particular pond back in 2023. Since then, the aquatic plants have established, the shrubs have matured and further uplighters have been added for night-time impact. ✨
