Match Report: Hessle Rangers Colts U12 0–3 Filey Town U12
Filey Town started the game in a composed manner, but it quickly became clear that Hessle Rangers Colts weren’t there just to make up the numbers. The opening stages were evenly contested, with plenty of back-and-forth play but few clear-cut chances for either side.
15' – GOAL! Filey Town 0–1
Filey finally broke the deadlock after some good build-up play from the back. Ashton played the ball out from goal, Freddie controlled it well before laying it off to Will, whose effort, part shot and part cross, found Chiko well positioned to finish into the bottom left-hand corner. Filey had their breakthrough and were good value for the lead.
Hessle continued to pose a threat, while Filey weren’t quite at their usual best. Some uncharacteristic long-ball football followed, with a handful of efforts either saved by the keeper, sent wide or fired over the bar.
Filey then felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Roman was pushed inside the box after hooking the ball back into play. However, the referee waved away the appeals.
The visitors continued to rotate their matchday squad in search of a second goal, but Hessle remained difficult to break down.
Half-time – Hessle Rangers Colts 0–1 Filey Town
Filey went into the break largely in control of the contest, but without delivering the second goal that would have given them some breathing space. Hessle had made life difficult, and the game remained finely poised.
With only three recognised defenders in the squad, Filey’s back line had to be reshuffled throughout the game. Despite the changes, the defence remained resolute, showing excellent physicality, commitment and timing to limit Hessle to efforts from distance.
37' – Filey began to find their rhythm, moving the ball quicker and with greater precision. The passing combinations and triangles around the Hessle defence were starting to open up spaces, and the visitors were getting closer to extending their lead.
42' – Filey came agonisingly close to a second. Chiko broke through the defensive line and raced towards goal before attempting to chip the keeper. It looked destined for the net, but the goalkeeper managed to get the slightest touch with his fingertips to save the home side.
50' – GOAL! Hessle Rangers Colts 0–2 Filey Town
Filey’s relentless work rate finally paid off. Harry played a ball over the top, and as the Hessle goalkeeper came out to deal with it, he hadn’t accounted for Freddie’s relentless pressing. Freddie won possession and made no mistake, smashing the ball into the roof of the net to give Filey some much-needed breathing space.
55' – GOAL! Hessle Rangers Colts 0–3 Filey Town
Filey were now playing with confidence, putting together some excellent passing moves. Noah delivered a cross from the left, which found Harry, whose shot was quickly closed down. Harry did well to steer the ball into Freddie’s path, and Freddie calmly finished into the bottom left-hand corner to put the result beyond doubt.
57' – Filey felt they should have had another penalty when Harry was brought down inside the box. Once again, their appeals were waved away by the referee.
Full-time – Hessle Rangers Colts 0–3 Filey Town
Filey were a threat throughout the contest, although full credit must go to Hessle Rangers Colts, who played their part in an entertaining game and made life difficult for the visitors at times.
Ultimately, Filey’s quality, work rate and determination proved decisive. After a competitive first half, the visitors found their rhythm, took their chances and saw the game out to secure all three points in this league fixture.
