🌶️ Jalapeño season has officially begun!

There’s something very satisfying about the first proper harvest of the year, and these jalapeños have certainly delivered! 🌶️

We’ve got enough now that it’s time to stop admiring them and start pickling them. 😋

Pickled jalapeños are ridiculously easy to make and are perfect for burgers, nachos, tacos, pizzas… or basically anything that needs a little kick!

🌶️ Quick Pickled Jalapeños

You’ll need:

- 250g fresh jalapeños, sliced
- 250ml white vinegar
- 250ml water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 garlic cloves, lightly crushed (optional)

Method:

1. Slice the jalapeños into rings. 🌶️
2. Add the vinegar, water, sugar, salt and garlic to a saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer.
3. Add the sliced jalapeños and simmer for 1–2 minutes — just enough to soften them slightly while keeping some crunch.
4. Pack the jalapeños into a clean jar and pour the hot pickling liquid over them.
5. Allow to cool, then pop them in the fridge.

They'll be good to eat after a few hours, but even better after a couple of days once those flavours have had time to develop.

And of course, this is exactly why we love growing our own… one minute you're planting a tiny seed, and before you know it you're making jars of homemade pickled jalapeños! 🌱➡️🌶️🫙

Fancy growing your own? Our monthly seed subscription boxes contain a selection of interesting and unusual varieties to get you growing throughout the year. 🌱

🍅 the first decent tomato harvest of the Year!
Nothing beats that burst of colour when the vines finally give up their treasures. These early beauties are sweet, warm from the sun, and honestly… worth every bit of graft.

Growing in a heatwave?
A few quick tips to keep your plants happy when the temperature refuses to chill:
🌱 Deep watering — Water less often but more thoroughly so moisture reaches the lower roots.
🌱 Shade cloth — Even a light cover during peak sun hours can prevent blossom drop.
🌱 Mulch layering — Straw, bark, or even grass clippings help lock in soil moisture.
🌱 Morning feed — Avoid feeding during the hottest part of the day to reduce stress.

Finally if you want delicious harvest moments like this all year round, check out our monthly seed subscription boxes: curated varieties, seasonal guidance and everything you need to keep your beds, pots and greenhouse thriving. Sign up and grow with us.

We need to issue an apology... 🙈🌱
..to everyone who planted our Custard White Patty Pan squash and Crystal Apple cucumber this season.

We're sorry.

Sorry for the mountain of harvests now taking over your kitchen worktops, the frantic messages of "what do I do with all these?" and the neighbours who suddenly seem to avoid answering the door when they see you carrying a basket. 😂

The photo says it all. This is just one harvest, and there are plenty more still growing!

The good news? Both varieties are incredibly productive, easy to grow and absolutely delicious. Pick them little and often to keep the plants producing for as long as possible. The young patty pans are wonderfully tender, while Crystal Apple cucumbers are best harvested when they're still small, crisp and sweet.

If you're looking for vegetable varieties that genuinely earn their place in the garden, these two are hard to beat.

Want to fill your garden with crops like these? Our monthly Seed Craft subscription boxes are packed with carefully selected vegetable varieties that are easy to grow, fun to harvest and chosen to keep you picking all season long.

Just don't say we didn't warn you... 😉🥒🎃

The courgette glut came first... then the patty pan squash decided to join the party... and now it's the Crystal Apple cucumbers stealing the show! 🥒😂

Believe it or not, every single one of these has come from just one solitary plant, and there are plenty more swelling up behind them. If this is what one plant can produce, imagine a whole row (thankfully we only have the one)

Crystal Apple cucumbers are one of our favourite varieties to grow. We're actually having to pick them slightly smaller than usual just to keep on top of the harvest! They’re wonderfully crisp, refreshingly sweet and lack the bitterness you sometimes find in larger slicing cucumbers. Perfect for salads, sandwiches, or simply eaten straight from the greenhouse.

If you're tempted to grow something a little different next season, why not let us do the choosing for you? Our monthly seed subscription boxes are packed with carefully selected varieties that are fun to grow, productive, and might just leave you wondering what to do with another bumper harvest! 🌱📦

🍈 The wait is almost over...

One of our Ogen melons is really starting to swell, and it's always exciting watching them transform from a tiny fuzzy fruit into a delicious summer treat. They're still a little while away from harvest, but every day brings them closer!

Ogen melons are famous for their wonderfully sweet, aromatic flesh and are surprisingly easy to grow in a greenhouse or sunny, sheltered spot. The secret is patience—don't rush to pick them. Wait until the background colour starts changing from green to a creamy yellow, they give off that unmistakable sweet melon aroma, and the fruit begins to slip away from the vine with a gentle twist.

There's nothing quite like slicing into a melon you've grown yourself... and trust us, the flavour is on another level compared with shop-bought!

Fancy growing your own next season? 🍈 Our monthly Seedcraft subscription boxes are packed with carefully selected varieties to keep you sowing and harvesting all year round, whether you're a seasoned grower or just getting started.

🌽 The moment of truth... 🌽

Is there anything more exciting (or nerve-racking!) than peeling back the husks on your first sweetcorn of the season? You spend months sowing, watering and watching them grow, only to wonder... will it be packed with golden kernels or a disappointing patchy cob? 😅

For us, sweetcorn is our absolute favourite vegetable to grow. Nothing from the supermarket comes close to the flavour of a cob picked fresh from the plant and on your plate just minutes later. Once you've tasted homegrown sweetcorn, there's no going back!

A few tips for harvesting at the perfect time: 🌽 Wait until the silks have turned brown and dry. 🌽 Gently peel back a tiny section of the husk and pierce a kernel with your fingernail. If the juice is milky, it's ready. If it's watery, leave it a few more days. If it's thick and doughy, you've left it a little too long. 🌽 Harvest in the morning if you can, and cook as soon as possible to enjoy the sweetest flavour.

If you'd love to experience that first-cob excitement for yourself, why not join our monthly seed subscription boxes? We'll send carefully chosen seasonal varieties straight to your door, making it easy to grow incredible vegetables throughout the year. Who knows... next summer you could be nervously unwrapping your very own perfect cob! 🌱📦🌽

We thought the courgette glut was bad... then the Patty Pans joined in! 😅

Meet Custard White Patty Pan Squash – one of the most eye-catching summer squash varieties you can grow. Their beautiful scalloped shape makes them look more like ornamental pumpkins than something destined for the dinner plate, but they're every bit as delicious as a courgette.

These are best picked while they're still young and tender, when the flesh is sweet, creamy and perfect for cooking. Try roasting them whole, slicing them onto the barbecue, stuffing them with a savoury filling, or simply frying them with garlic and butter. They also make a fantastic talking point on the dinner table thanks to their unique shape.

At this rate, we're going to need to start leaving bags of squash on the neighbours' doorsteps under the cover of darkness! 😂

If you'd like to grow unusual and productive vegetables like these yourself, our monthly seed subscription boxes are packed with carefully chosen seasonal varieties, growing advice and plenty of inspiration to keep your kitchen (and maybe your neighbours'!) well stocked all year round. 🌱

🌞 Heat stress? No problem! 🌞

You might notice the unusual green patches on these Atena Polka courgettes. Don't worry – this is a harmless skin mutation caused by the recent hot weather. Heat stress can temporarily affect how the fruit develops its colour, but it doesn't change the flavour or quality one bit. In fact, they're just as delicious as their perfectly yellow counterparts!

Now comes the real challenge... the courgette glut! 😅 One minute you're patiently waiting for the first harvest, and the next you're wondering how to stop them multiplying overnight!

If you're swimming in courgettes, here are a few tasty ways to use them: 🥒 Grill them with olive oil and herbs 🍝 Spiralise them into healthy "courgetti" 🥣 Blend them into soups 🧀 Bake them into cheesy fritters 🍫 And yes... they make an incredibly moist chocolate cake that no one will guess contains vegetables!

🌱 Fresh from the garden! 🥒🤍

Today's harvest is two fantastic varieties that our Seed Subscription Box members have been growing – Delistar cucumber and Custard White Patty Pan squash.

🥒 Delistar Cucumber • Produces smooth, crisp fruits with a wonderfully sweet flavour. • A reliable, high-yielding variety that keeps cropping throughout the summer. • Perfect for salads, sandwiches or simply sliced as a refreshing snack. • Best picked while still young for the most tender, crunchy texture.

🤍 Custard White Patty Pan Squash • A striking scalloped squash with beautiful creamy-white fruits. • Harvest when they're around 8–10cm across for the best flavour and tenderness. • Delicious roasted, grilled, stuffed or pan-fried. • Regular picking encourages the plant to produce even more fruits throughout the season.

There's nothing quite like stepping into the garden and picking fresh vegetables that you've grown from seed. Every harvest is a reminder that a few minutes of sowing earlier in the year can lead to months of delicious homegrown food.

If you'd like to enjoy harvests like these, our monthly Seed Subscription Boxes make it easy. Each box contains carefully selected varieties, growing advice and seasonal sowing inspiration, helping you grow fresh produce all year round.
