As the weather warms up, you might notice more bees buzzing around. This increase in bee activity is natural and vital for our environment. One fascinating behavior you might observe is swarming.

Why Do Bees Swarm?

Swarming is a natural part of a honey bee colony’s life cycle. It occurs when the colony grows too large for its hive. The queen bee and about half of the worker bees leave the original hive in search of a new home. While a swarm might look intimidating, it’s important to remember that these bees are not aggressive. They are simply protecting their queen and looking for a new place to call home.

Bees are Friends, Not Foes!

Swarms are essential for natural bee reproduction and biodiversity. They play a critical role in pollinating our plants and crops. So, when you see a swarm, admire from a distance and appreciate the incredible work these creatures do for our planet.

Did you know ......

Honey, has three critical healing effects…

First, honey supports your immune system and fights off harmful bacteria.

Second, it supplies the “building blocks” for healthy cells.

Lastly, Honey burns differently in your body than Sugar! That’s because all the extra enzymes and nutrients in honey not only help the body rebuild itself — they also regulate how the body uses the sugar.

Our island honey should be ready within the next 2 - 3 weeks so do let us know if you would like to reserve a jar

In the sunshine the bees are busy on this blackthorn bush. They are gathering pollen and holding it in the orange sacs on their rear legs. They'll take it back to the hive as food.

Spring is here!

All of the hives were busy in today's sunshine. It will soon be time to put the supers on to get the honey production started.

Had a bit of spare time this afternoon to finish cleaning and filtering some of last year's wax. This is from frames the bees were using to raise young. It's recommended to replace the frames every three years. The challenge then is recovering the wax, but I think I've got nice clean results. Anyone want some beeswax?

It's been a lovely sunny day here on the Essex coast. Some honeybees have been been leaving the hive on "cleansing flights", in other words, nipping out for a wee.

This nucleus hive houses a swarm collected back in August. That's late for a swarm but they seem to be doing well. Later on this year I'll move the colony into a full sized hive and hopefully get some honey by the autumn.

Beekeepers are often approached about winged, flying creatures, especially in the spring and summer period, when they are their most active simply working and are no cause for alarm. We can only help if they are honeybees.

Lovely morning today - the bees are out gathering early pollen and nectar. Inside the hive the Queen bee will have started laying hundreds of eggs a day to bring on fresh workers bees for the main spring honey crop.
