Jobs available now - Silchester Control Systems Ltd (SCS) near Alton, Hampshire is a well- established & growing automation & controls engineering systems integrator & registered partner for Rockwell/Allen Bradley’s controls products and systems, those from Siemens, Schneider Electric UK & other major systems providers. SCS designs, procures, installs, commissions, maintains & updates all industrial control systems, hardware & software, with a special interest in digital transformation as it sweeps industry, due to technological changes & the effects of the pandemic. SCS works internationally for industrial clients inc. GlaxoSmithKline, QinetiQ, AWE, Pfizer, Kodak, Thales, Babcock, BAE Systems, Hanson, Heidelberg Cement, Bairds Malt, NHS, Novartis, Network Rail, P&G, Fluor, Boehringer Ingelheim, NSG Environmental & Aquila Nuclear Engineering in controls systems for nuclear decommissioning.
The Covid-19 pandemic & fast-moving technological changes have caused many industrial organisations to re-evaluate their investments in controls and automation systems – please see: https://lnkd.in/gqdBweQ & new clients wish to discuss IIoT & robotics in automation engineering systems. Dr Maurice Wilkins of the Institute of Measurement & Control’s special interest group in Digital Transformation describes the future at: https://lnkd.in/gSY7kz9 and this is also how SCS sees the future. Thus automation engineering is a dynamic career choice for many electrical and electro-mechanical engineers.
SCS would like to interview, as soon as possible, engineers that fit the following profile for permanent employment:-
Engineering graduates with a bias to electrical engineering
Minimum of 3 years’ engineering experience in process industries
Experience PLC programming
Electrical design experience
Ideally a driven/hands on type of personality
Perhaps already working at a System Integrator
Located within 30 minutes of the office – although changing work patterns may relax on this with increased home working.

For most of recorded world history, hand-made products defined industrial production. They were fashioned in homes and small workshops, such as village blacksmiths, millers and bakers. Over the last three centuries, those cottage industries have made a gradual but accelerating transition into mass-production in factories, driven by a process of mechanisation for efficiency and cost reduction. This began with the increasing use of steam and waterpower, in what has become known as “Industry 1” but took decades. “Industry 4” is the latest phase of this process for increased quality, efficiency and cost reduction in industry which is now rooted in “Smart Technology”. Modern production lines began with the extensive use of railways and telegraph networks and the advent of electricity before 1914 in “Industry 2”. “Industry 3.0 arrived before1970 and an increased use of electronics and computer technology, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control and SCADA systems, connectivity, internet access, and early advances in renewable energy.

From 2015, today’s “Industry 4.0”, or the “Digital Revolution”, has been continuing the trend although the Covid pandemic is tending to obscure the arrival in industry and importance of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). “Industry 4” and the supercomputer allows production processes to engage with large-scale, machine-to-machine communication and is pairing IIoT with cyber-physical systems. Although IIoT is still in early development in 2020, it coexists with SCADA but is bringing about a wave of new business models and technologies that are changing the landscape of industrial process controls. For the future, “Industry 5.0” will create a great change of perspective; people will become the fundamental axis of the production sector. Industry 5.0 will allow further automation of processes, robotics and the evolution of technology for people to develop new skills in production processes. Humans’ work will be in intellectual production, making training necessary to be proactive in this new model of industrial society in which a generation of skilled people begin to remotely monitor and manage “dark factories”.

What makes a reliable process controls systems integrator?
Issues faced by industrial manufacturers today include….
• cost control, to compete in world markets;
• refining and developing their own processes;
• retention of critical skills.
Many UK manufacturers rely on manual process controls. Investment in automation improves processes, cuts costs, increases profits and shareholder value, increasing productivity.
Automation needs flexible, highly skilled industrial organisations to design and fit systems into existing and new process plant. They buy in system components, integrating them into the final control systems to meet the customers’ needs. They are Systems Integrators (SIs).
Theirs is not an easy task. Manufacturers need automation to be risk free.
Their selection of SIs will be based on capability proven over many years in complex automation projects. To do otherwise would be commercial madness.
Professionally-recognised SIs can be found in the list of the Institute of Measurement and Control’s Companion Company Scheme – see: https://www.instmc.org/Membership/Companion-Company-List -S
