How easy is it to turn your water off? Stop tap hidden away at the back of a cupboard? Will it even turn when you get to it?

A Surestop Remote Stopcock makes turning the water off as easy as flicking a switch.

This customer's stop tap is right at the back of the cupboard under the stairs. This is also the only place he has to store several large, heavy boxes. That, and a bad back, makes turning the water off very difficult.

Following this installation, he is very happy that he can now 'switch' the water off.

Earlier this week I serviced a boiler. During the service I picked up a fault, so yesterday I went back to repair it.

The burner and ignition electrodes are sealed into the heat exchanger with a gasket. Over time, heat degrades the gasket, leading to hot flue gases escaping. This boiler is about 9 years old and is of an age where it is susceptible to this fault.

If this fault is caught early, it's a relatively inexpensive repair. If it's left to progress, further damage is caused to the wiring loom and ignition leads.

This customer has their boiler serviced every year so this fault was caught early and there was no further damage to the boiler.

Remembering to have an appliance serviced regularly is not often a top priority. I operate a reminder system to help. And as a reminder for me, I leave notes inside the boiler 😃

I was called out to a gas leak. Traced it to this fitting under the floor. The pipework was probably installed 30+ years ago, but only started leaking recently when it was disturbed during the installation of underfloor insulation. The blackening on the pipe to the left of the joint is a common tell-tale of a gas leak. It's amazing that it's lasted so long. A correctly made joint would not have leaked. The system was completely gas-tight when I'd finished 🙂
