We're very sad to report that Kretzschmaria deusta, the fungal infection that affected a beautiful Norway Maple in Victoria Park in May, has also taken hold of a veteran sycamore at Millennium Green. However, this time the team are hopeful the tree can be saved, with some works required to make it safe. The footpath that runs under the tree is closed until the work is complete.

Due to the infection, the tree's limbs have lost their structural strength and without careful tree works, a limb could fall, with an obvious risk to safety and to the tree itself.

Work starts Monday 27 October and is following veteran tree best practice management, undertaking a phased crown reduction. It is hoped that with these careful works the tree will live on for a long time to come

A respected local Arboricultural Consultant (Ben Rose of Bosky Trees) had been called in by to assess a Norway Maple at Victoria Park in Frome that had recently shed a large limb. The limb had crashed into the boundary fence that separates the park from the Avanti School infantโ€™s playground and raised obvious concerns about the safety of the tree. Upon inspection, Ben discovered fruiting bodies of the aggressive decay fungi Kretzschmaria deusta in the major unions of the crown. This fungi is known for itโ€™s ability to rapidly decay both the soft (cellulose) and hard (lignified) tissue within a tree, diminishing the structural integrity of the wood and accelerating the risk of catastrophic stem or limb failure. Rooted in such close proximity to both the school and also within a popular public park, there was no choice but to safely remove the tree to eliminate the high risk to people and property. We never take the removal of such trees lightly and recognised that it would understandably be upsetting to the many who have appreciated this tree for many years. Working conscientiously over two days, we safely brought the tree down, carefully lowering each section to the ground using rigging lines and pulleys, to avoid damage to the ground, pavement, fence, shrubs and herbaceous plantings below the crown. We kept an open communication with the public who voiced their concerns and explained the reasoning for the works. Hopefully easing their understandable upset. The stump was removed by (masters of their craft!) and the felled stem will be milled/ carved into a bench for park users to enjoy for years to come. New trees will be planted to ensure the continuation of this historic park and its arboretum collection of specimen trees.

A winter of feeling privileged to be working with the ancient and veteran trees on the Longleat Estate. Looking to give them more light, more room to breathe, reducing competition for water and nutrients and creating better habitats around them for the wildlife that rely on them. Amongst it all, also a trip to Sherwood Forest to learn the principles and practicalities of the work from respected pioneers in the community of conservation arboriculture and veteran tree management .harris and . Spending time with these Old Ones is always pleasure and rarely a chore, no matter how muddy it gets. Great to collaborate with and on this, fellow Tree Folk for sure ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ

A fun day out back in the winter removing a very large, windthrown Poplar that had laid itself to rest across the Mells river in Great Elm, Somerset during Storm Eowyn. With no access for a larger crane, the only option for our Gus was to manually section the fallen tree whilst tethered to the boom of Acer Tree Surgeon's smaller yet more Marvellous Mog Crane. The job went smoothly and Gus was only dunked in the drink just the once, which was joyous to watch for all of us there safe and dry upon the banks ๐Ÿ˜

Introducing our Captain. Gus Porter is a young, talented and progressive arborist, born and raised in Frome, Somerset. For more than ten years he has developed his skills in the arboriculture trade, working as a contract climbing arborist in England and New Zealand. He is a deeply practical man with a great love of trees, the outdoors and being as high up as possible. In October 2024 he set up The Tree Folk and, with a great team of like minded tree folk around him to back him up, looks to develop the business with a solid reputation for high standards and conservation minded work. He doesn't really do "social media" and he'll be embarrassed by this post.. which is why someone else is writing it without his knowledge whilst he's up a tree somewhere getting on with what he does best ๐Ÿ˜‚ โค๏ธ ๐ŸŒณ
