Digital Waste Tracking - What It Means for Our Partners

From October 2026, the UK government is introducing mandatory Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) - replacing paper-based waste transfer notes with a centralised digital system that records every waste movement in real time.

The aim is to improve transparency across the entire waste chain.

As a licensed waste receiver, GAP Group is in the first phase of businesses required to comply. We're investing in new systems that will integrate directly with the government's DWT portal, ensuring every load we receive is digitally logged and assigned a unique tracking ID from the moment it arrives at our facility.

What this means for you is straightforward: your duty of care as a waste producer doesn't end when a collection is made. Businesses that send waste to a receiver who isn't registered and compliant with DWT face greater legal exposure - the Environment Agency will have real-time visibility of waste movements, and gaps in the digital record are no longer easy to overlook.

The To***co and V**es Act could have implications beyond the point of sale.

The Act empowers the Secretary of State to create a licensing scheme for anyone who sells to***co or v**e products, meaning retailers face a level of scrutiny on their v**e operations that simply didn't exist before.

When you're licensed, every part of how you handle those products matters - including what happens to them at end of life.

That's where v**e recycling compliance becomes more important than ever. Under existing WEEE Regulations, all UK retailers selling v**es are already legally required to provide a take-back facility for used devices.

With retailer licensing now on the horizon, non-compliance anywhere in the chain, including WEEE obligations, carries greater reputational and regulatory risk.

If people are willing to do the right thing, are we making it easy enough for them?

Under UK WEEE regulations, retailers selling v**es are required to provide a take-back service for used v**es and v**e components. The legislation is already in place.

Yet research continues to show that many consumers either can't find recycling points or don't know they exist. At the same time, millions of v**es are still being discarded every week, despite the disposable v**e ban.

The easier we make recycling, the more likely people are to use it.

As an industry, there is a real opportunity to improve:
Visibility of recycling points
Consistency across retail locations
Consumer awareness and education
Collection and recycling infrastructure

One Year of GAP Alba - Scotland's Most Advanced Fridge Processing Facility

A year ago today, we opened the doors at GAP Alba... and what a year it's been.

Launched on 28 May 2025 at Binn Eco-Park near Perth, GAP Alba was always more than just a new facility. It represented a genuine step change in how end-of-life refrigeration appliances are handled in the UK.

Twelve months on, here's what that investment has delivered:
🌿 Net Zero operations - the facility runs on 100% renewable energy generated on-site at Binn Eco-Park, making it one of the most environmentally advanced fridge processing sites in the country.

♻️ Full-circle fridge reprocessing - every appliance that comes through is handled from collection through to safe disposal of hazardous byproducts, including fridge gases and PUR foam, which are processed into energy-from-waste feedstock rather than lost to landfill.

A year in, the facility stands as proof that responsible recycling and commercial ambition aren't in tension - they pull in the same direction.
