One Year of GAP Alba - Scotland's Most Advanced Fridge Processing Facility

A year ago today, we opened the doors at GAP Alba... and what a year it's been.

Launched on 28 May 2025 at Binn Eco-Park near Perth, GAP Alba was always more than just a new facility. It represented a genuine step change in how end-of-life refrigeration appliances are handled in the UK.

Twelve months on, here's what that investment has delivered:
🌿 Net Zero operations - the facility runs on 100% renewable energy generated on-site at Binn Eco-Park, making it one of the most environmentally advanced fridge processing sites in the country.

♻️ Full-circle fridge reprocessing - every appliance that comes through is handled from collection through to safe disposal of hazardous byproducts, including fridge gases and PUR foam, which are processed into energy-from-waste feedstock rather than lost to landfill.

A year in, the facility stands as proof that responsible recycling and commercial ambition aren't in tension - they pull in the same direction.

If you have fridge volumes in Scotland or across the UK that need a compliant, environmentally sound destination, we'd love to hear from you.

Insulation panel disposal is still catching a lot of contractors out - especially when it comes to compliance and proper segregation.

We’ve just published a contractor’s guide that breaks down exactly how to handle insulation panel disposal in the UK - including compliance considerations, recycling routes, and what to avoid to stay on the right side of regulations.

If you’re working in construction, facilities management, or demolition, it’s worth a read:

The reality is insulation waste is becoming a growing challenge across the industry. With more scrutiny on ESG performance, landfill diversion, and proper waste classification, getting this right is essential.

Even Sparky’s keeping up with the training programme 🚛⚠️

This week, Sparky and his driver were at TTS completing ADR (Dangerous Goods) training as part of GAP Group’s continued focus on safe transportation for our partners.

As waste streams become more complex and increasingly regulated, ongoing training plays an important role in ensuring materials are transported safely and responsibly.

A great V**e Compliance Workshop today, supporting the Office for Product Safety and Standards - thank you to everyone who attended.

The session focused on the growing challenges around v**e waste, WEEE compliance, battery safety and the practical realities of managing these waste streams safely and responsibly.

With increasing regulation, growing fire risks and continued pressure on the sector, education and collaboration have never been more important.

We covered:
🔋 The environmental and safety risks linked to v**e waste
♻️ How compliant v**e recycling works in practice
đź“‹ Key WEEE responsibilities and considerations
đźš› The operational challenges behind collections and processing

It was great to see so much engagement and open discussion around v**e recycling and compliance.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting businesses across the sector at our next session on the 16th June.

Progress update: GAP Urban Metals x DEScycle ♻️

We’re pleased to share continued progress from DEScycle - a deep tech partner focused on recovering critical and precious metals from electronic waste using more environmentally conscious processes.

As demand for critical materials continues to grow, improving how we recover and reuse valuable resources from e-waste becomes increasingly important.

DEScycle’s approach uses Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) - an innovative alternative to traditional recovery methods, designed to support more efficient and sustainable metal recovery.

We’re pleased to see construction of the demo plant progressing well, with completion on track for the end of June and commissioning planned for July.

It’s another positive step toward improving circularity in electronic waste and helping unlock more value from materials already in circulation.

Looking forward to sharing more updates as the project progresses.

Anyone can deliver a service when everything goes to plan.

But in operational environments, challenges will always happen.

Collections change.
Priorities shift.
Unexpected issues come up.

We believe what really defines a supplier isn’t whether problems occur, it’s how they respond when they do.

For us, that means staying accountable, communicating clearly, and focusing on solutions - Not excuses - that support our customers and keep things moving.

It’s something we think about a lot as a business, because long-term partnerships are built on trust during the difficult moments, not just the easy ones.

Would your employees benefit from this?

We're looking to work with HR managers and business owners who want to add something genuinely useful to their employee benefits offering.

Renew2U, part of GAP Group North East, sells quality-tested, refurbished home appliances with a 12-month warranty, at up to 60% off the high street price. Washing machines, fridges, ovens, dishwashers... the kind of thing people actually need.

We can set up a personalised discount code for your team. It costs nothing, takes minutes, and gives your employees access to affordable, sustainable appliances whenever they need them.

If that sounds like something that could add value to your benefits portal, we'd love to hear from you, or feel free to tag someone who looks after this kind of thing.

And if you know a business that might appreciate this, big or small, a share would go a long way. We'd love to support as many teams as we can.

Great to see Steve representing GAP Renew at the AMDEA UK Conference this week.

The conversations around reuse, refurbishment and extending appliance life cycles are becoming more important than ever. Not just for sustainability goals, but for affordability, accessibility and reducing unnecessary waste.

Steve shared insight into the work being done across GAP Renew to give appliances a second life through refurbishment, returns processing and practical circular economy solutions.

A big thank you to AMDEA UK for bringing together so many valuable discussions from across the sector 👏

House fires in England have risen 4.4% - the first increase in a decade.

New government data shows over 26,000 dwelling fires in the year to September 2025. That's one fire every 20 minutes.

⚠️ Firefighters and fire safety experts are pointing to clear culprits:

Lithium-ion battery products in the home
Counterfeit or substandard electrical items
Incorrect chargers and unsafe charging practices

E-bikes. E-scooters. Small electricals.

All becoming more common - and in some cases, more dangerous.

What’s changed is the pace and scale of these products entering homes, often without the right checks, standards, or understanding of how they should be used safely.

It’s a reminder that electrical safety doesn’t stop at purchase.

It’s about:
Buying from trusted retailers
Using the correct chargers
Understanding the risks of damaged or low-quality products

As the number of battery-powered devices continues to grow, so does the importance of getting this right.

Great to see the team out this weekend supporting the Morpeth Beer Festival 🍻

The event is a fantastic local fixture, bringing the community together while raising funds for great causes.

One of those causes is Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, which does incredible work supporting disadvantaged and disabled children and young people across the UK.

From funding life-changing projects to creating opportunities through sport, their impact goes far beyond the pitch.

Events like this are a great reminder that community, fundraising, and having a good time can all go hand in hand.

Well done to everyone involved 👏

The To***co and V**es Act has passed. Here’s what it means for your business.

Royal Assent was granted on 29 April 2026, and the new law will begin rolling out major changes from January 2027.

If you sell, stock, or handle v**es, here’s what’s coming:

đź”’ From January 2027, it will be illegal to sell to***co to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, with the age threshold rising each year after that.

đźš« V**e advertising and sponsorship will be banned, with tighter controls on flavours, packaging, and branding that appeal to children.

đź“‹ A retail licensing scheme for to***co and v**e sellers is on the way, backed by stronger enforcement powers and tougher action on illicit sales.

♻️ V**es are still WEEE. Every unit that comes off your shelf needs a compliant disposal route.

January 2027 is closer than it looks. The retailers who act now, by putting compliant collection in place, documenting their duty of care, and preparing for inspections, will be the ones best placed when enforcement starts.

At GAP Group, we help retailers handle v**e disposal compliantly. Get in touch to discuss a licensed collection route.
