Last week, we attended the UK National Defence Procurement & Supply Chain Summit in Manchester.

It was a great opportunity to connect and discuss opportunities across the defence supply chain and to learn more about the sector’s future.

Last Friday, the Southbay team wore pink and hosted a bake sale in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Alongside raising funds, Wear It Pink Day is a reminder of the importance of knowing your body and checking your chest regularly for any changes.

Finding breast cancer early can make a difference, so it is important to know what is normal for you and speak to your GP if you notice anything unusual.

This makes it number 20 out of 25!

Works continue to progress at Tilbury, with all piles installed and dock edge blocks completed.

The team has also completed the installation of temporary and permanent steelwork, with walkway construction and backfilling works ongoing.

Health and safety remain a priority, with 185 days worked without a reportable accident.

SFI’s Falkland Islands project has now passed 22,000 hours worked without a reportable accident.

With the new causeway now substantially complete, the project team will now switch their attention to supporting our client in the construction of a new landmass development.

Another important stage of the project is now underway, building on the progress made so far and focussing on a safe delivery.

Established in 2001 by Gordon Green and Jimmy Johnston, Southbay began as a specialist marine civil engineering contractor delivering projects throughout the North of England.

Since then, under the leadership of our current Managing Director Paul Stephenson and Operations Director Antony Ballantyne, we’ve grown into a multidisciplinary business operating throughout the UK, with the continued involvement of Gordon as Chairman.

From our first contracts to some of our largest projects, including the £19 million Riverside Quay Extension for the Port of Tyne, our journey has been shaped by the people, projects and relationships that have helped Southbay grow.

As we celebrate 25 years, we’ll be looking back at some of the projects, people and moments that have made Southbay what it is today, while looking ahead to what comes next.

Yesterday, our site team spent some time helping at Beatrice Community Garden in Blyth.

The team cleared weeds and overgrown areas, as well as putting up fencing to help prepare the site for its next stage.

Beatrice Community Garden is being developed by Newsham & New Delaval Allotment & Garden Association as an accessible and inclusive space for the local community.

The plans include wheelchair-friendly paths, raised growing areas and seating, with the garden particularly supporting older and less-able allotment tenants to continue gardening and spending time outdoors.

Another one of our social value initiatives for 2026.

Works to the Marine Stop Wall are now complete, with the site team having commenced removal of the temporary cofferdam.

The project has also provided opportunities to support the local community through the employment of local labour, donating to local a Girl Guiding unit and donating to multiple charities in relation to homelessness, poverty, and anti-social behaviour.

With close to 15,000 man hours worked without a RIDDOR reportable accident, the project continues to progress safely towards completion.

Southbay are proud to be delivering works that will contribute to preserving Liverpool’s rich history in shipbuilding and supporting the transformation of the waterfront.

We were pleased to support an incredible fundraising challenge undertaken by a team from Port of Milford Haven, who completed a 45 mile trek across Pembrokeshire in support of three local charities.

A team of 16 took on 45 miles of varied terrain over two days, starting in Saundersfoot on 25th August and finishing on 26th August.

Southbay was proud to support the fundraising efforts for Sandy Bear Children's Bereavement Charity, Pembrokeshire People First and Tŷ Hafan, contributing to three fantastic causes supporting the local community.

Well done to everyone who took part in the challenge!

The project team continues to make excellent progress, with over 22,000 man hours worked incident free to date.

Working throughout the winter months, the causeway is now substantially complete following construction of the new bank seat structure, which will facilitate the installation of the new linkspan.

We have continued to maintain an excellent relationship with the Falkland Islands community, providing regular updates through media outlets, and supporting the local supply chain.

A second vessel has recently departed from the Port of Sunderland, transporting specialist plant, equipment and materials required to support the team throughout the next stages of construction.

Well done to the project team for their efforts in progressing this logistically challenging scheme in the South Atlantic.

We’re proud to have successfully delivered the upgrade of 140m of Eastern Quay, supporting the operational capacity of Ridham Sea Terminal.

Delivered through a design and build contract in partnership with Beckett Rankine, the project involved stabilising the existing mass concrete gravity wall through the installation of a new sheet piled structure.

The new sheet piled structure has been tied into the existing gravity wall to reduce movement caused by the marine environment.

The project achieved a 97% HSEQ audit score, with close to 25,000 man hours completed without a reportable accident.

This follows the successful completion of Phase 1 in 2022, which was delivered by Southbay, and involved upgrading a 90m section of the Eastern Quay.
