Did you know that contaminated brownfield sites such as landfills, not suitable for housing, might still have potential for renewable energy developments like battery storage systems or solar farms. Not only can this unlock the economic potential of these sites, but there is often a lot less opposition compared to sites on farmland or greenbelt.

An example of such a project ERS has worked on was a large solar farm built on a landfill site in Wolverhampton that was actively gassing. Our site team carrying out the ground investigation had to be careful when drilling into the landfill cap that everything was properly sealed, and air monitoring was conducted to monitor for any gas escaping.

The 15,000 panel solar farm has since been completed and is powering a nearby hospital. As well as dramatically reducing its carbon footprint, the solar farm is expected to save the hospital around £1 million per year, which will be redirected to front line services.

Recently ERS has been working at a site in the south of the greater Glasgow area which is being redeveloped for housing. However, during the initial enabling works, localised fragments of asbestos tile and other waste materials like wood and tyres was discovered – potentially from illegal historic dumping.

Areas with localised asbestos contamination were hand-picked, with the client wishing to re-use the remediated soil under suitable capping material. The rest was sent for disposal at a suitably licenced facility. The works were supervised by ERS’ in-house asbestos qualified engineers with dust suppression to minimise the risk of fibre release and air monitoring throughout the works.

In other areas where testing had shown there was no asbestos contamination, soil containing fly-tipped wood and tyres was screened to remove these materials, which was then sent off-site for disposal.

Ground investigations are important for renewable energy projects to assess subsurface conditions. Knowing the properties of the underlying soil and bedrock can help with foundation design for large structures like wind turbines, identify issues with things like drainage or holding capacity, and help inform the design of safety features like earthing of equipment by assessing the conductivity of the soil.

We're hiring! ERS is looking to recruit a Graduate Geologist to join the team at our Glasgow office.

The role will involve working on across Scotland and occasionally the wider UK, with typical tasks involving gas and groundwater monitoring, logging soil and rock samples, trial pitting and reporting.

Although some experience is desirable, this is a *genuine graduate role* and we welcome applicants from recent Geology and Earth Science graduates!
