Would you like to learn how to make timber frames?
Starting this Spring, Butney Timberworks will be running training courses on traditional Scribe Rule framing!

Based in our spacious Glasgow workshop, students will learn how to work with heavy section lumber to create strong and accurate joinery.

Scribe Rule is the dominant system of carpentry in use for traditional framing in the UK. This ancient method of woodworking takes account of the natural characteristics of wood (which is very rarely perfectly straight and square!) to produce tight fitting joints that can stand the test of time.

Our course will cover all of the joinery required to make a simple timber frame, including braces, trusses and tying joints. Ideal for amateur enthusiasts and those considering a career in carpentry alike.

A beautiful Spring day at checking back in on this build from last year.

A feature corner window and larch cladding details really set off the contemporary look on this new workshop building. Inside, the traditional frame in beautiful Douglas fir from is accented with clay plaster applied directly to wood fibre insulation board.

A beautiful crisp morning to be taking this frame to site!

Work begins at today on this custom bothy building. The frame is made entirely with Scottish grown Douglas Fir, locally sourced from and hand crafted in our workshop here in Glasgow.

Local photographer Eye in the Sky Glasgow, caught these beautiful snaps of Craig and Ben during the roof installation of the build at Bantaskin Street in Maryhill, Glasgow.

We were building throughout lockdown so there weren't too many people around. It certainly made for a nice quiet building environment, especially when there were no cars on the street.
