How can architects and landscape architects collaborate more effectively to achieve shared climate and biodiversity goals?

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and Landscape Institute Scotland (LI) have announced the upcoming Architect-Landscape Architect Breakfast Seminar due to take place at the RIAS Office, Edinburgh on November 12th.

The theme of this CPD breakfast is ‘Meeting Shared Goals on Climate and Biodiversity’. It will examine the distinct value each discipline brings to a project and how these contributions can be aligned to build stronger, more productive connections during the design process.

Drawing on their experience across a diverse range of projects, Felicity Steers Steers, Director at erz Ltd, and Sophie Logan of Sophie Logan consultancy will share their unique perspectives on what makes interdisciplinary collaboration successful, and the common challenges that can hinder it. Along with Zoe Black and Tim Wilson, they will discuss how the Scottish built environment industry can come together to address some of the most pressing issues we face including improving climate resilience, housing delivery, biodiversity, and nature recovery.

This event is suitable for practices of all sizes, and will include opportunities for networking and audience discussion.

We asked erz Associate Rhiannon Cowell to share one of her favourite design details from an erz project - Rhiannon’s pick: Dalmonach Steps.

‘A detail from the refurbishment of an existing set of steps in Dalmonach - a new red ramp for prams and cycles alongside the steps.

The red picks up a colour already used locally by The West Dunbartonshire Environment Trust, carrying through to the metalwork of the bench halfway up the steps. The simple geometry of the ramp and steps threads neatly between mature trees and wildflower planting to the slopes on either side. Careful detailing, including a shallow resin-bound gravel build-up, helps to minimise the impact on tree roots and allows the new route to sit lightly within its surroundings.

Something so practical can also bring a little colour and character to an everyday journey: a clear piece of human intervention that contrasts with, but works alongside, its natural setting.’

Last week the erz team took a misty and magical journey for our office day out ✨

Starting with a ferry ride across to Dunoon, we took a walk amongst the monkey puzzles, ferns, and hills at Benmore Botanic Gardens to gain inspiration from the varied landscapes and plant life, before stopping for a BBQ lunch and wild swim at lovely Loch Eck ⛰️

Places of learning must be robust, yet delightful, sensory and dynamic places that encourage exploration, action and imagination, for children to learn, play and socialise in. 🌲⚽️🌳📝

We are delighted to share that one of our directors, Steers will be running a workshop at this year’s .places.scotland conference, which will take an interdisciplinary approach to the question:

“Do architects understand landscape design?”

This workshop will bring together architects, landscape designers and stakeholders to challenge each other to find new ways to masterplan learning spaces- indoors and outdoors- that invite creativity, wellbeing and connectivity- including with community outside the school.

Referencing examples including the award winning Frogston School in Edinburgh, a new-build primary school designed to encourage community use, and The Island School in Cyprus, a new education hub integrated into its hillside context to provide nature-led learning for over 2,000 students, this workshop will explore how outdoor greenspace and community use is becoming an integral part of the learning experience- reflecting natural systems for wellbeing while adapting to the current emergencies of climate change, flooding frequency, and biodiversity.

The workshop will invite participants to bring their own challenges or examples of:

• Opportunities for improved educational outcomes

• Increased curriculum opportunities

• Positive impacts on health and well-being

• Improved community cohesion

• Biodiversity and climate change resilience

• Local access to healthy food and diverse natural environments

The outcome of this workshop would build on case studies that illustrate the role the education estate can play for food growing, community connections, parental engagement, leisure, sport, health, and even as places for emergency shelter in climate events.

Last month, one of our team had the opportunity to join on their trip to Frasdorf, Germany, to see the headquarters and workshops of Richter-Spielgeräte. It was a fantastic experience for many reasons, an abundance of schnapps being one!

Of course, it was also amazing to see the care and attention paid to each piece of play equipment and the cooperation across the whole company that allows this family-run business to thrive.

The priority always being the child, and long-term ease of maintenance being a focus with the construction, reflects a design strategy that centres longevity and the end user.

The positive outcome of this is clear with long lasting and well loved playgrounds, a few of which were thoroughly tested on the last day of the trip on a tour across Munich.

We can confidently say that though children are the focus, adults can certainly enjoy a Timberplay playground too!

erz is a Glasgow based team of Landscape Architects & Urban Designers. We are looking for a highly organised & proactive Studio Manager to support the smooth day-to-day running of our design studio.

Location: Glasgow
Hours: 3 days / 22.5hrs
Salary: £30,000 – £35,000 pro rata, depending on experience
