We’re delighted that on Friday, Collective Architecture was named Architects' Journal AJ100 Employer of the Year for the second year in a row.

Winning this award last year was an incredible achievement, so to receive this recognition again feels particularly meaningful. It reflects our continued commitment to evolving as a practice and listening to the people who shape it.

The judges recognised that Collective has “not rested on its laurels”, and highlighted our willingness to respond to staff feedback and rethink conventional approaches.

As an employee-owned practice for nearly two decades, our founding principles of collective ownership and equity continue to guide the way we work. From transparent pay structures and profit sharing, to investing in training, education and wellbeing, we remain committed to creating a practice where people can thrive and develop in different ways. Winning this award on Employee Ownership Day 2026 was an added bonus!

Our colleague Caitlin Arbuckle-MacLeod, chartered planner/urban designer and member of our Strategy team, was recently awarded one of three Young Urbanist Small Grants from the (AoU) for her proposed Swimmable Cities roundtable event.

Co-hosted with , the roundtable will invite collaborators from across the UK to discuss the spatial, economic, and ecological benefits that could be achieved by Glasgow joining the alliance, a ‘global coalition working to restore urban waterways and make them safe, clean, and accessible for swimming’.
The discussion will focus on the possibilities that joining the alliance might open up for waterfront placemaking – drawing upon precedents from other Swimmable Cities overseas, such as Sydney and Rotterdam – with the aim of demonstrating how the ambitions of the Alliance align with Glasgow City Council’s strategic and spatial goals for the city and, feasibly, encouraging the Council to sign the Swimmable Cities’ charter. The Collective Strategy team has recently been contributing in various capacities to conversations surrounding urban waterfronts in Scotland, and the potential these spaces offer to unlock amenity, wellbeing, and placemaking benefits for our communities.

Through her work on the award-winning ‘Who Owns the Clyde’ project, as one half of the duo, our director Jude Barber has been leading a ‘citizen investigation’ into ownership of the River Clyde, sparking widespread discussion around its potential future as a more vibrant, accessible, even swimmable river.

Jude was recently interviewed, alongside collaborator Louise Welsh, by Ingvild Paulsen of for her article Make Glasgow Swimmable Again (link on profile), in which she discussed the possibility of urban swimming in the Clyde: “I have seen how other cities engage with their rivers and the benefits it can bring. I would love the same for Glasgow…the concept of urban swimming in Glasgow is not new. People have swum in the Clyde in the past.”

A huge congratulations to Terence Ho on passing his Part 3 Architecture exam and becoming a fully qualified architect!

A fantastic achievement and a significant milestone in his professional journey.

Terence will soon be working on a large-scale housing project in Dumfries for Wheatley Homes, which has recently achieved planning permission. Catherinefield, Dumfries, is a very familiar area for Terence, having spent much of his childhood there, and with his family still based locally, it’s especially meaningful to see his passion for architecture shaping a place he knows so well.

We’re excited to see him continue to grow and have no doubt this marks the beginning of a very exciting career in architecture.

As part of the restoration of the Category B-listed façade at The George Hotel, the central ornate entrance door head and pilasters have been faithfully reconstructed using traditional conservation joinery techniques.

Working with , we are fully restoring the Category B-listed façade of the former George Hotel, which has stood in Stranraer since 1876 and marks its 150th anniversary this year. This represents a key milestone in the transformation of this iconic building as part of a complex, multi-purpose development in the heart of Stranraer.

Massing studies allow us to test and refine ideas quickly exploring different forms, scales and relationships before anything is fixed. By sharing these studies early, the wider design team can respond, challenge and help steer the direction of the project.

These massing studies for the Signal Tower helped shape our approach to sensitively inserting new build elements into the existing historic building fabric.

When working with historic buildings, our aim is to design interventions that are respectful of what exists while thoughtfully enhancing the wider built environment and its future use.

Situated prominently above Arbroath’s harbour skyline, the Signal Tower Museum and complex has played a defining role in the maritime and social history of the town. Working in collaboration with , Collective will undertake a holistic assessment of the museum’s physical environment, interpretive offer, and operational model. The project will also consider how the museum can better serve the community of Arbroath, acting not only as a historic landmark but as an active, welcoming cultural destination, positioning itself as a sustainable, forward-looking resource that contributes to Arbroath’s identity, tourism offer, and civic pride.
