Well, I’ve started something.

First layer down and I’m going to leave this one alone for now and let the watercolour dry in its own way. No firm decisions yet—just colour, movement and the beginnings of an atmosphere.

Sometimes starting is enough after a busy day.

Life and the day job have rather taken over lately, so painting has had to take a back seat for a while.
But something big is in the works.
A fresh sheet is stretched and ready for paint — a small but important step back into the studio.
Now for the exciting part: the first wash.

My recent visit to Rhodes reminded me of this small watercolour from last year.

It’s the view from near Stefano's Restaurant Kiotari, where the fishing boats come in and the fish is landed for the restaurant. I loved the quiet working-harbour feel of it — boats, rocks, turquoise water and that hazy heat in the distance.

It’s still looking for a home, and I’m wondering whether it might need a little trip back to Rhodes.

I’ve shared this one at a few stages along the way, but I think it’s finally reached the point where it wants to stop.

I’ve not managed to be very productive in the studio recently, but when I went in to clean my palette this was still sitting on the easel — and I couldn’t resist a final bit of fiddling.

Signed now, so I reckon that’s it.

Hope you like it.

A little Rhodes sketch from the view at dinner.

I liked the soft evening light, the line of trees against the sea, and all those ordinary little details that make a place feel real.

Not sure it’s quite finished yet, so I’m letting it sit for now

I painted Maggie May last year, but I’ve been watching her again this spring and wondering where the babies are after all that nesting.

She’s been such a busy little magpie, darting about with that purposeful energy they have, and it’s been lovely to see her back again this year.

That’s one of the things I love most about painting familiar wildlife — you don’t just paint a moment, you end up following the story as it keeps unfolding.

Have you been watching any little spring visitors this year?

🎨🌊 Into the blue ~ oil on canvas ~ 8x10

I was reminded of this one while in Rhodes recently, and by recent life events that have left me feeling all at sea. It portrays the sea as broad, shifting planes of teal cut with pale ridges of light beneath a low, clouded sky. I wanted to convey that drifting feeling.

I love painting the water it is so soothing. Just as being in it can be as well.

What feelings does it bring to you?

Started this one in Rhodes.

I didn’t manage much painting while I was away ~ partly due to an action-packed itinerary and partly due to being very busy doing nothing at times.

This is the view from Stefanos in Rhodes, where we had dinner looking out over the sea.

Very early stage ~ just soft sky, sea, tree shapes and the bones of the composition for now. I’m trying to catch that quiet pink-blue evening before I start adding too much detail.

About to fly away from Rhodes. Beautiful parting sunset.
