Loft insulation is a highly effective, cost saving layer of material. Typically mineral wool laid across the attic floor to prevent heat from escaping through the roof. It significantly improves home energy efficiency, with a recommended thickness of at least 270mm to maximize heat retention and lower energy bills.
Methods & Materials:
Blanket Insulation (Rolls): Common, cost effective, and easy for DIY installation, usually made of fiberglass or mineral wool.
Loose fill: Ideal for topping up or reaching awkward spots, made from cellulose or cork.
Multi foil: Reflective, thin material ideal for reducing thickness requirements while stopping air leakage.
Thickness: The recommended minimum is 270 mm. If you have existing insulation, it can be topped up to this depth.
Ventilation: It is crucial not to block eaves and airbricks to prevent moisture buildup and dampness.
Storage: If using the loft for storage, specialized raised floor systems can be used to avoid compressing the insulation.
Benefits:
Savings: Properly installed insulation can significantly reduce heating bills.
