❄️ Heating Tip of the Month: Protect Your Condensate Pipe This December! 🌡️

With temperatures dropping in December, one of the most common causes of boiler breakdowns is a frozen condensate pipe — and it always seems to happen on the coldest mornings!

👉 Tip: Insulate your condensate pipe to prevent winter boiler shutdowns.

The white plastic pipe that usually runs outside from your boiler can easily freeze in icy weather. When it does, your boiler may shut down to protect itself — leaving you with no heating or hot water.

🛠️ Simple ways to prevent freezing:
• Wrap the pipe in proper outdoor pipe insulation
• Check for any gaps, cracks or exposed joints
• If the pipe runs a long distance outside, consider rerouting or upgrading it for better winter protection

💡 Heating Tip of the Month: Get Your Radiators Ready for Winter! 🔥

Now that we’re coming into autumn and winter — and with a cold snap of weather expected next week — it’s the perfect time to make sure your heating system is ready to keep you warm and comfortable. There’s nothing worse than switching the heating on during a chilly spell and discovering it’s not working properly!

👉 Tip: Bleed your radiators at the start of the heating season.

Over time, air can get trapped inside your radiators, stopping hot water from circulating properly. This leads to cold spots, uneven heating, and higher energy bills — all things you can avoid with a quick maintenance check.

🛠️ How to Bleed a Radiator:
1. Turn off your heating system and let it cool.
2. Use a radiator key to slowly open the bleed valve (usually at the top corner).
3. Listen for the hissing sound — that’s the trapped air escaping.
4. Once water flows out in a steady stream, close the valve.

💧 Keep a cloth or small container handy to catch any drips!

With colder weather on the way, now is the ideal moment to make sure your radiators and heating system are working efficiently and ready for the drop in temperature.

🔧 Important: After bleeding your radiators, don’t forget to check your boiler’s pressure gauge. Bleeding can lower system pressure, and your heating won’t work properly if it gets too low. If needed, top it back up to the recommended level (usually between 1.0 and 1.5 bar).

PK Heating & Plumbing are delighted to announce that we have a new member of staff starting on 10th Jan, Kerry Baker.
Kerry worked for us 10 years ago, and since then she has run her own successful plumbing business and has had children but is still very keen to get back to the trade she really enjoys, she will be working 3 days a week. We hope this will also give us the opportunity to respond quicker to our customer needs with the option to expand our services to even more customers.

Extreme weather advise
As this cold weather continues it is advisable to locate your cold water stop tap to the property in case you need to close the tap due to a burst pipe. Try to turn the tap on and off a couple of times to ensure the tap is free turning. If the tap will not turn and you suspect that it has frozen you can use a warm air blower, this could be a fan heater, hair drier, a paint stripper (on low), if water is leaking where you have the stop tap please DO NOT use electrical appliances to avoid electrocution.
