What was once a hidden wartime shelter is now being transformed into a place for a new generation to explore.

Dating back to the Second World War, this reinforced concrete air raid shelter had been buried beneath a landscaped mound in the garden. Rather than fill it in or remove it, our client saw an opportunity to give it a new life as an above-and-below-ground playhouse for his young son.

Inspired by the kind of place he would have loved to play in as a child, the project retains the shelter’s history and character while giving it a new purpose as a space to explore and enjoy.

With the Bank Holiday giving us a little more time this weekend, it’s a good opportunity to make the most of our outdoor spaces 🌻

From generous terraces overlooking landscaped gardens to sheltered courtyards, poolside spaces and smaller spots tucked alongside the house, there’s no single approach to creating a successful outdoor space. Each responds differently to the architecture, its setting and the way the home is lived in, whether designed for gathering around a table, opening up the house to the garden or simply finding a quiet place to sit.

Whatever the scale or setting, it’s about creating spaces that feel like a natural part of the home.

How do you bring a historic cottage into modern family life without losing what makes it distinctive?

This part Victorian, part oak-framed cottage had evolved considerably over time, resulting in an unusual layout and little connection to the gardens.

The redesigned frontage has transformed the presence of the property.

A two-storey front extension introduces a strong gable, bringing greater balance and character to the elevation, while the oak-framed porch creates a more welcoming entrance.

Carefully selected brickwork and windows connect the extension with the existing property allowing the additions to feel sympathetic to the original home.

Behind this private driveway sit two homes designed to make the most of every floor 🌿

At 3,500 square feet each, the properties span three storeys, with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and three reception rooms. At the heart of each home, a generous kitchen/breakfast room looks out across the newly landscaped rear garden.

What if an extension could feel like it had always belonged? 🪵

The oak-framed addition takes its cue from how this Grade II listed, 16th-century cottage might naturally have evolved over time.

Inspired by the timber barn-style structures that would traditionally have provided space for animals and storage, the extension reinterprets this familiar form for contemporary living. Oak framing and timber weatherboarding sit alongside generous glazing and picture windows, creating a clear connection to the original cottage while giving the new addition its own architectural identity.

Recently completed project in Farnham, Surrey for our wonderful clients and their family.

The project included refurbing and modernising the existing interior to suit their needs by removing internal walls and reorganising the layout to unlock the potential of the existing area at the rear of the property.

A 2-storey front extension with oak framed porch creates a wow-factor entrance experience which sets the tone for the rest of the family home, and also introduces kerb appeal.

We undertook initial briefing, concept design, planning submission, technical working drawings, tendering to selected contractors and on-site contract administration services through to completion to help deliver our clients dream home.
