⚡ “One Socket Shouldn’t Power Half Your House.”
It’s something we see in homes all the time — one wall socket powering an extension lead, which then powers another extension, and before you know it there are TVs, chargers, lamps, heaters and kitchen appliances all running from the same point.
While it might seem convenient, overloaded extensions and multi-plug adaptors are one of the most common causes of electrical fires in homes. Sockets and cables are only designed to handle a certain amount of electrical load. When too many high-powered devices are plugged in at once, the cables can overheat and become a serious fire risk.
It’s especially important to avoid plugging appliances like heaters, kettles, air fryers, washing machines or tumble dryers into extension leads. These high-power appliances should always be plugged directly into a wall socket.
⚡ A few simple ways to stay safe:
• Avoid “daisy chaining” extensions together
• Don’t overload multi-plug adaptors
• Plug high-power appliances directly into the wall
• Check leads regularly for heat or damage
• Consider installing additional sockets where needed
If you constantly find yourself running out of plug sockets, it might be a sign your home simply needs more installed. Adding extra sockets is often a simple upgrade that makes your home safer and far more convenient.
