Bank Holiday Monday and this email from the Contracts Manager on our recent Huyton job lands in my inbox.

It's always nice to get positive feedback. But it's usually just about the work.

This email tells me that we're succeeding in our attempts to make a difference to the general atmosphere on site.

Every good job has a healthy mix of teamwork across trades and a bit of good-natured banter.

That's something we strive to bring to every job. It's almost as important as the actual ceilings and partitions!

Things don't always go to plan on site. Problems crop up, programmes change and different trades inevitably end up relying on each other.

Being the company that says “we'll see what we can do” rather than “that's not our problem” can make a massive difference.

And if everyone can have a laugh while they're sorting it out, even better.

So while I'm obviously proud of the work we completed at Huyton, I'm probably even more proud to receive feedback like this.

“Nothing was an issue and it's really appreciated. You all made the job light hearted.

Today we wrapped up our project in Huyton. 👍

This one became a little bigger for us than originally expected!

Our original scope was fairly straightforward – a couple of partition walls and new MF ceilings, clad with plastic tongue & groove soffit board.

As the job progressed though, the list started growing.

Pipe boxings, boiler cupboards, wall linings, plastering and patching, alterations, infills... we even ended up doing a bit of prep work to help other trades along the way.

As is often the case with refurbishment work, particularly in an old building, what you find on site doesn't always quite match what's on the drawings. 😅

So there was plenty of head scratching, adapting and figuring things out as we went.

We've always tried to be the sort of company that, when something unexpected crops up, doesn't immediately say "that's not our job."

If we can help solve it, keep things moving and get the job over the line, we will.

It's something we take a lot of pride in.

A challenging one at times, but a good job to be involved with, and we've worked alongside some cracking people along the way.

Big thanks to Andy for jumping in at short notice when the main contractor needed some plastering sorted, and obviously to Lewis, who put plenty of graft in as always.

And a special mention for my old mate Marc, who originally came along to give us a hand for two days...
..and somehow ended up staying until the very end.

Three weeks later. 🤣

Very much appreciated, mate.

Sometimes you spend ages looking for a complicated answer because the obvious one shouldn't be possible. 🤦‍♂️

We've been making good progress with the hollow soffit board ceilings on our Huyton project and, after completing the first two rooms without too much drama, we'd got into a decent rhythm.

Then we started the third room.

Something wasn't right.

We used the same tried and trusted method, but the boards just weren't fitting properly.

Naturally, my first assumption was that I'd cocked something up somewhere.

So we measured again.

And again.

Checked the set-out. Checked our cuts. Checked pretty much everything we could think of.

Everything was telling us it should fit.

It didn't.

Eventually I said to the lads:

"I know this can't be the issue, but it's almost as if the plank is bowed."

So I looked down the length.

It was. Clear as day.


Out came the laser, which confirmed a bow of around 20mm through the middle of a 5m plank.

We checked the next few from the pack and found the same issue.

Once we'd worked out what was happening, it became fairly straightforward to deal with, but we'd already lost a fair bit of time looking everywhere else for the problem.

At least we know what to look for now. 👍

Another little site lesson learned:

Sometimes the least likely explanation turns out to be the right one. 🤣

Another week in Huyton done. 👍

We've made some decent progress this week, getting a good chunk of the ceilings boarded, and a load of the little extras sorted; boiler cupboards, window and door infills, wall linings, etc.

As mentioned in our midweek update, my old mate Marc joined us for a few days to lend a hand.

As expected, he got stuck in and proved pretty useful.

Useful enough, in fact, to find himself in contention for the prestigious Spiral Interior Systems Employee of the Week award.

He even claimed he'd enjoyed working with us!

The feeling was almost mutual. 😉

Unfortunately, Lewis decided to abandon the team early this week, selfishly claiming he wanted "a life".
The lack of dedication has been noted. 🤣

With Lewis conveniently removing himself from contention, Marc's path to glory was clear, and yesterday afternoon he was presented with the coveted Spiral Interior Systems Employee of the Week Runner-Up Trophy. 🏆

A proud moment for him, I'm sure.

For anyone wondering why it's only the runner-up trophy...

I win first place every week.

I'm the boss. I make the rules. 🤣

Well done, Marc. Thoroughly deserved. 👏

Eight shifts in on our Huyton project and things are a tad behind the schedule I'd set for us.

As I mentioned in last week's update, this old building has already thrown up its fair share of surprises, particularly for the mechanical and electrical trades.

Nobody's fault — it's just the nature of refurbishment work. But little hold-ups at the start inevitably have a knock-on effect and can disrupt the flow of a job.

We've managed to crack on pretty well; a few stops and starts, and the odd request to "leave that bit out", but otherwise things are going ok.

Now we've got the cloud out of the way, let's talk about the silver lining!

When a job presents problems, the true worth of the trades on site becomes clear.

That's where we've been able to show what we can bring to the table.

My old friend Marc is back with us this week. Being able to bring an experienced pair of hands onto the job will help no end.

Three M&E trades and the site manager have complimented us on our ability to spot a potential issue before it becomes an actual issue, and our willingness to offer solutions rather than walk away muttering, "not my problem".

The word that's cropped up twice — "refreshing".

Which is refreshing. 😁

This week we started the refurbishment of five toilet blocks at a school in Huyton for a new client.

Although the main contractor is a new one for us, their site manager is an old pal. I've worked with Gary a few times over the years, so it's always good to see a familiar face on a new job.

The building itself was originally constructed during WW2 to be used as a hospital, and it's fair to say they certainly built it to last.
Bomb-proof? Perhaps.
Future-proof? Not so much.

It's thrown up a few surprises....old pipework everywhere we need our framework to be, brickwork harder than diamond, several "that doesn't fit" moments, and plenty of "according to the drawings, that doesn't exist" conversations. 🤣

As usual, we mucked in with the other trades on site and managed to solve most issues. For one, however, we needed backup!
The strip-out revealed a few patches of loose plaster and some areas that needed some dot & dab.
Luckily, I know a couple of fellas..... Andy & Tom of A. Vernon & Co juggled their own hectic workload and got it sorted in no time. 👌

All in all, a good week.

A few old pals, a few new ones, and plenty of positive feedback.

I can't wait to see what this old building has in store for us next week!

Today's offering comes from Kels cafe in Huyton.

This place reminded me of the proper old-school workers' cafes that used to be everywhere. Nothing fancy, just a fresh, hot, honest brekkie with no frills.
Sadly, these places seem to be disappearing rapidly, but the odd little gem can still be found — and Kels is definitely one of them.

My £9.50 got me 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 2 eggs, 2 hash browns, black pudding, mushrooms, beans and tinned tomatoes, all served with 2 toast and a mug of tea.

Great value, friendly service and exactly what I wanted before a day's graft.

Just the job! 👌

This week's shout out goes to the team at Minster in Buckley.

When I first started Spiral, it was tough to get a trade account. Most of the big suppliers wouldn't touch a brand new contractor. Holly actually reached out to me and went above and beyond to help me get an account set up. I've never forgotten that.

Since then, Emma, Holly and Jo have always been a pleasure to deal with. Whether it's tracking down prices, checking availability, helping me work through a specification, or chasing manufacturers for answers, nothing ever seems too much hassle. And believe me, some of the things I throw at them are definitely hassle!

The girls in the office, along with the lads in the warehouse and on the trucks, always make sure we get what we need, where we need it, and in good condition.

And, as an added bonus... I don't think I've ever been in there without being offered a brew. That alone deserves a mention! ☕😂

Thanks for all your help over the years. It's genuinely appreciated.
