5 Things Contractors Get Wrong About Joining NFRC CPS

"I need to be an NFRC member first." Not true, Competent Person Scheme (CPS) and NFRC trade body membership are separate. You can join CPS on its own.

"It'll take months." The process has clear stages: probity check, desk-based audit, office audit, site audit. Most delays come from missing paperwork or delays in works availability on site, not the process itself.

"I need commercial premises." No. Auditors assess your documentation and processes, not your office decor.

"If I fail an audit, that's it." An audit finding isn't a rejection, it's feedback. You'll typically get the chance to address gaps and resubmit.

"It's only worth it for big companies." Sole traders and small teams join CPS too. Saving time waiting for your client's building control approval delays projects. Self-certifying and winning work based on credibility makes you more valuable to your client!

Are you an experienced roofing professional looking for the next step in your career? As CPS expands to support not only self-certification but also competency and compliance assessment, our inspectorate is expanding with it.
We’re looking for experienced roofing professionals with strong technical knowledge who want to continue to grow and improve standards across the sector.

Applicants must have relevant roofing qualifications, roofing industry experience and ideally experience assessing competence or quality assurance.
As a CPS Inspector, you’ll play a key role in supporting contractors, strengthening competence and helping build standards across the roofing industry. In return we'll support that role by working with you to develop your skills, experience and qualifications.

✅ A documented complaints procedure

Get these in place first, and your probity check and desk-based audit will move through to an onsite inspection without back-and-forth delays.
