We’ve had a fun afternoon today at Cherry Willingham Primary School delivering our interactive health and safety talk to the Key Stage 2 children.

Topcon Building was recently appointed by Lincolnshire County Council to carry out refurbishment and upgrade works to the school, but before the project commences on 11 March 2024, we wanted to discuss with the children the various dangers and hazards associated with construction sites.

The children were very engaged and asked lots of great questions.

We chatted about the different jobs in the construction industry, with many of the children proudly pointing out that their family members also work on building sites. We discussed PPE and how it keeps us safe and of course, the children loved dressing up in the hi-vis jackets and hard hats! We then watched a video of 3 teenagers accessing a site and watched how a seemingly fun and harmless situation could turn extremely dangerous, very quickly!

We have now tasked the children with producing safety posters encompassing everything they learnt and over the next couple of weeks, we will choose 3 winners who will receive a prize and have their posters printed and displayed on our site fencing as a daily reminder of the dangers of construction sites.

We look forward to posting photographs of the winners.

We are pleased to announce that the steelwork for the new state-of-the-art animal care teaching facility at the Nuns Corner campus for Grimsby Institute Of Further and Higher Education is being erected.

The establishment of this new teaching facility and veterinary practice will revolutionise animal care education and veterinary services in the region.

Following the completion of the steelwork, we will be hosting a steel-signing celebration to commemorate this significant milestone. Onsite, we will be joined by current animal care students who will sign and leave messages on the beams before they become embedded into the fabric of the new building.

Construction began at the start of the year, with a targeted completion date set for late 2024.

Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of the project.

Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of returning to Stanford Junior and Infant School, Laceby to announce the winners of our safety poster competition.

Following our interactive health and safety talk delivered a few weeks ago, we challenged the pupils to design a safety poster for display on our site fencing. We requested that the poster be vibrant and informative, emphasising the dangers of construction sites to discourage unauthorised access after hours.

We received numerous well-thought-out posters, but these are the winners. Congratulations to the girls for their fantastic efforts! 👏

Their winning posters are now on display at the school's entrance, and they have been rewarded with book vouchers and chocolates.

In addition to the poster competition, we also provided the school with copies of When I Grow Up books written by Rich Smith. We aim to introduce the children to the world of construction and the various career opportunities within the industry. Our hope is to bridge the local skills gap and inspire young individuals to consider a career in construction and engineering.

We are pleased to have teamed up with local QS/PM Consultancy Practice, Hewitt Associates Ltd, to provide a work experience placement this week for local secondary school student, Grace.

Grace is interested in a career in construction/engineering and is excited to have the opportunity to work with both Topcon Building Ltd and Hewitt Associates Ltd to understand how the different roles within the industry work together to deliver successful projects.

Working alongside various members of the teams, she will visit several construction sites locally and, upon completion of a site induction, will have the opportunity to walk around the live sites. Grace will also be sitting in a few site meetings with the site teams, clients and architects.

Working together enables us to provide her with a detailed overview of the whole lifecycle of a project from the very early stage when the QS is supporting the client with feasibility and costings, through to procurement and appointing a contractor to deliver the scheme.

Grace will be introduced to a range of careers within the industry that she likely never knew existed and will have the time to learn more about the roles and career options available to her.

We look forward to working together!

We can’t wait to start distributing our local schools with copies of When I Grow Up.

The construction industry is suffering from a huge skills shortage with children not being introduced to the wide range of careers available within the industry.

‘When I Grow Up’, produced by Rich Smith, highlights very clearly how our industry underpins almost everything and has been produced to promote and encourage youngsters into considering a career in the construction and engineering industry.

Alongside the health and safety talks and safety poster competitions, which Topcon Building deliver on the majority of our primary school projects, this book will also form a crucial part of our school engagement strategy.
