What happens when a hidden drain blocks up above a busy high street shop?

We were called out to a major emergency at a local shop this week after a severe flood broke through the ceiling from the two floors of apartments above.

Our investigation revealed a massive drain blockage had caused the upstairs toilets to overflow, backing waste water right up into the baths. The pressure was so intense it actually blew the pan connectors straight off the toilets.

To make matters worse, finding the source was a total nightmare. The shop's flooring and shelving had been built directly over the manholes. Crucial rodding eyes and drain access points were completely boxed in behind hallway walls. We had no choice but to carefully cut access points into the shop floor and plasterboard just to get our CCTV drain cameras inside.

Using our camera equipment, we located and cleared a huge buildup of flushed tissue. However, the screen also revealed the root cause. Extremely poor original plumbing meant buried pipe joints had completely come apart underground.

We rigged up a massive blue tarp system to protect the store's stock from further damage while we get this sorted. We will keep you updated on the progress!

A messy heating setup is more than just an eyesore: it is a headache waiting to happen.

We were recently called out to this property to sort out an underfloor heating system that looked like a bowl of red spaghetti. The original white plastic manifold was chaotic, the wiring was loose, and the pipework was completely unmanageable.

We completely stripped it back and started fresh. As you can see in the 'after' photos, we installed a solid timber backboard and rebuilt the entire plant setup using high-quality copper pipework with precision bends. We upgraded the manifold, neatly routed the red underfloor pipes, and installed dual magnetic filters and a plate heat exchanger to keep the system running efficiently and cleanly for years to come.

Neat pipework isn't just for show. It makes the system easier to service, safer to operate, and far more reliable.

A dropping boiler pressure gauge could mean water is silently escaping under your floors.

This photo shows a recent leak detection job we tackled locally in Harpenden. The customer suspected a problem but had no idea where the water was going. Instead of tearing up the entire floor blindly, we use specialist leak detection equipment like thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact location of the problem.

As you can see, we only had to break a small section of the concrete near the door frame to expose these buried copper pipes. That green oxidation on the copper is a telltale sign of a slow and persistent leak that has been going on for a while. Catching it now saves a huge amount of water damage to the property.

Not every water main failure is caused by damage.

After the extreme heat and prolonged dry weather, the ground moved and shifted the existing water main, causing it to fail.

We hydraulically installed a new water main, compacted the surrounding earth with sand, and reinstated the paving blocks to leave everything secure and properly finished.

The recent dry weather is doing more than just turning the grass brown: it is actually snapping underground pipes.

When the ground dries out in extreme heat, it shrinks and shifts. This ground movement is incredibly powerful and recently sheared a customer's underground water main right in two.

We were called out to get their water flowing safely again. Instead of digging up the entire driveway and causing a massive headache, we used our hydraulic moling equipment. This allows us to shoot a channel underground and pull a brand new, highly durable blue water main through with minimal disruption.

Once the new pipe was in, we hooked up the pressure gauge to ensure a perfect, watertight seal. Finally, we properly compacted the earth, added a fresh layer of sand, and relayed the block paving. As you can see from the photos, you would never even know we had been there.

Spotting bubbling paint or damp patches on your walls?

We were recently called out by one of our regular customers in the Harpenden area who had exactly this problem in their basement. After a thorough investigation using our moisture testing equipment, we traced the root cause to a leaking hot water pipe hidden right behind the wall.

To stop any further damage, we opened up the plasterwork and safely isolated the affected copper pipes. While the customer waits for their insurance assessor to make a final decision, we have already brought in our commercial dehumidifiers and air movers to get the drying process underway.
