🌳 Our gardens are more important during a heatwave than we might realise
With temperatures climbing again, it’s worth remembering that trees, hedges, lawns and planted areas aren’t just there to look good.
Trees and plants provide shade and release moisture into the air, helping to cool their surroundings. Unlike concrete, paving and artificial surfaces, healthy green spaces absorb less heat and provide valuable shelter for people and wildlife.
If your area is affected by a hosepipe ban, always follow the guidance issued by your local water company. A few careful choices can still help protect your garden while conserving water:
💧 Prioritise newly planted trees, shrubs, hedges and vulnerable plants
🪣 Use collected rainwater wherever possible
🌱 If permitted, use a watering can and apply water directly to the roots
☀️ Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation
🌾 Allow established lawns to turn brown—they will usually recover when rain returns
🐝 Put out a shallow dish of water with stones in it for insects and wildlife, refreshing it regularly
There’s no need to keep every part of the garden perfectly green. During prolonged dry weather, using water responsibly and protecting the plants that need it most can make a real difference.
As our summers become warmer, thoughtfully planted and well-maintained gardens can play a small but meaningful part in creating cooler, greener and more wildlife-friendly surroundings.
Look after your green spaces—they’re looking after us too. 🌿
