THE SOFA MOVED. THE SOCKETS DIDN'T.

It’s surprising how often the electrical layout of a room stops making sense simply because the way we use that room has changed. You move the sofa to make better use of the space, put the television on a different wall or turn a spare bedroom into a home office, and suddenly the sockets that were perfectly adequate before are nowhere near where you actually need them.

That’s usually when extension leads start appearing behind furniture, charging cables get stretched across rooms and multiway adaptors become a permanent fixture.

There’s nothing unusual about using an extension lead when you need one, but if you’re permanently working around the position of your sockets, it might be worth considering whether the room’s electrical layout still suits the way you live.

This is particularly worth thinking about when you’re decorating or renovating. Before everything goes back into place, consider where the furniture will sit, where you’ll charge devices, where lamps or televisions will be positioned and whether the room might be used differently in the future. A little thought at that stage can make the finished space considerably more practical without filling every wall with unnecessary sockets.
Your home shouldn’t have to work around its electrics. The electrics should work around your home.

If you’re renovating, redecorating or simply want to make the electrics in your home work better for the way you use it, speak to JW Electrical.

YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT YOUR ELECTRICS.

Most of the time, you probably don't.
You walk into a room and the light comes on.
You plug something in and it works.

You cook dinner, charge your phone, put the washing on and go about your day without giving the electrical installation behind it all a second thought.

That's how it should be.

Good electrics aren't there to demand your attention. They're there to quietly make your home work.

It's when you're constantly swapping plugs, relying on extension leads, avoiding a temperamental switch, resetting something that keeps tripping or working around sockets that are never where you need them that you start to notice them.

Sometimes the question isn't simply:
"Is there anything wrong with my electrics?"

It's:
"Do they still work for the way we live?"

If the answer is no, it might be time to change that.

DON'T JUST WIRE THE HOME YOU HAVE.
WIRE THE HOME YOU'RE BUILDING.

The best time to think about tomorrow's electrics is often while you're doing today's work.

You might not need an EV charger yet.

You might not have built the garden room.

CCTV might be something for later.

Outdoor lighting, additional power, a home office or new technology might not even be on the shopping list yet.

That doesn't mean you need to install everything now.

But if you're already renovating, extending or carrying out significant electrical work, it's worth thinking about what your home might need in the future.

A little forward planning at the right stage can make future upgrades considerably easier than trying to add everything once the walls are finished, the driveway is down and the garden has been landscaped.

Built in. Not bolted on.

Good electrical planning isn't only about what you need today.

It's about making sure the home you're building is ready for what comes next.

BEFORE YOU ORDER THE KITCHEN...

Think about the electrics.

It sounds obvious, but it's surprisingly easy to start choosing cabinets, appliances and worktops before deciding exactly how the finished kitchen is going to work.

Where will the kettle live?
Coffee machine?
Air fryer?
Microwave?
Do you want sockets on the island?
Under-cabinet lighting?
Pendant lights?
USB charging?

And what about the appliances that need their own electrical supply?

Once the kitchen has been designed, ordered and installation has started, changing the electrical layout can become considerably more awkward.

Get us involved earlier and we can plan the electrics around how you're actually going to use the kitchen, rather than trying to make everything fit afterwards.
A good kitchen shouldn't just look right.

It should work right.

WHY DOES THE SAME BULB KEEP BLOWING?

Once? Probably the bulb.

Twice? Could still be bad luck.

But if the same light fitting keeps going through bulbs, it's worth paying attention.

Repeated bulb failure can have several causes, including the wrong type of lamp for the fitting, overheating, a poor connection or a fault within the fitting itself.

And sometimes, the problem isn't the bulb at all.

The important bit is the pattern.

If bulbs are lasting perfectly well everywhere else in the house but one particular fitting keeps causing problems, repeatedly replacing the bulb isn't necessarily fixing what's causing it.

You don't need to worry every time a bulb fails.

But when the same electrical problem keeps coming back, that's usually the point where it's worth finding out why.

YOUR HOUSE LOOKS EMPTY BEFORE YOU LEAVE IT.

Suitcases packed.

Doors locked.

Windows checked.

And then every light in the house goes off for a week.

One of the simplest things to think about before going away is how your home looks when nobody's there.

Timers and smart lighting can automatically switch selected lights on and off at different times, helping your home look occupied without leaving lights running continuously.

Outdoor lighting can also make entrances, paths and darker areas around the property more visible when you return home.

It doesn't need to mean turning your house into a smart home.

Sometimes a few well planned changes are all that's needed.

If you're heading away this summer, it might be worth looking at your home from the outside one evening.

Does it immediately look like nobody's home?

YOUR GARDEN ENDS HERE. YOUR HOME DOESN’T.

Gardens have changed.

They’re no longer just somewhere for a table, a shed and the lawnmower.

For many of us, they’ve become another part of the home.

Outdoor kitchens.
Garden rooms.
Lighting.
Hot tubs.
Security cameras.
Electric gates.
Power for tools and equipment.

And yet outdoor electrics are often one of the last things considered when a garden or property is being redesigned.

That can mean extension leads through windows, badly positioned sockets or trying to add power after everything else has already been finished.

A little planning beforehand can make a huge difference.

If you're landscaping, building a garden room or planning improvements outside, think about how you might want to use the space in a few years, not just what you need today.

THE MOST OVERWORKED
SOCKET IN YOUR HOUSE

There’s usually one.
The socket behind the TV with an extension lead attached.

The one beside the bed powering chargers, a lamp and whatever else needs plugging in.

Or the kitchen socket that somehow ends up doing everything.

Modern homes use considerably more electrical equipment than many were originally designed around, which is why extension leads and adaptors often become a permanent solution rather than a temporary one.

That doesn’t automatically mean there’s a problem, but if one socket is permanently doing the work of four, it may be telling you that the room no longer has enough outlets for the way you actually use it.

When planning electrical work, we don't just think about where sockets can go. We think about how the room will actually be lived in.

The most expensive room in your house probably isn't the one you think.

Many people assume it's the living room or the utility room because of the appliances.

In reality...

For most homes, it's the kitchen.

Think about everything that's working in there every day.

The kettle.
The oven.
The dishwasher.
The fridge freezer.
The microwave.
The extractor.
The air fryer.
The washing machine.
The coffee machine.

Modern kitchens place a huge demand on a home's electrical system, which is why careful planning and properly designed circuits matter so much.

It's also one of the reasons kitchens often need more sockets than any other room in the house.

If you're planning a new kitchen or a renovation, it's worth thinking about the electrics before the cabinets go in.

Need advice on your next project? We'd be happy to help.

NEATNESS ISN'T THE GOAL. IT'S THE RESULT.

When you look behind a finished wall, you'll never see the cables again.

So why does it matter if they're routed neatly?

Because neat work is rarely just about appearance.

It usually reflects good planning, careful installation and attention to detail.

The things that make an electrical installation safer, easier to maintain and built to last.

Anyone can make something look good once the walls are painted.

The real quality is in the work that disappears behind them.

That's the standard we aim for on every job, whether anyone ever sees it or not.

If you're planning a renovation, extension or electrical upgrade, we'd be happy to help.
