Yes - and itโ€™s one of the most common retrofit setups we design.

For a kitchen extension, garage conversion or single refurbished room, wet UFH can often run alongside the existing radiator system without replacing the boiler.

But there are a few things that need to be right:

๐Ÿ”ธThe right mixing arrangement for the number of loops
๐Ÿ”ธBoiler modulation low enough to avoid short-cycling

The blending valve is what stands between the two, and most people never see inside one.
Hot flow enters one chamber. Cool return from the floor enters another. A thermostatic element expands and contracts between them, throttling one side or the other to hold whatever temperature has been set.
Which works until the pressure upstream is too high. Push hard enough and hot water goes straight through, and the floor sees a temperature it was never designed for.

Yes. Just not in the same room.

Usually that means underfloor downstairs, radiators up. Where it goes wrong is the wiring, because when the radiator circuit calls for heat you do not want the underfloor coming on with it.
There is a specific way to wire the two so they stay independent, using a dedicated zone and its own valve. We walk the wiring centre, terminal by terminal.
Under a minute, and it is one of the first questions we get on any mixed system.

For this home refurbishment, our customer selected JoFloor 28 with the 8mm TileTop board to suit the intended tiled floor finish.

That specification formed part of our full UFH design service, ensuring the system build-up, circuit layout and components were correctly matched to the property, floor finish and required heat output.

The complete system included AmbiFlexยฎ P12 pipe, a 5-port manifold, CircoMax pumpset, UB10 V3 wiring centre, controls and associated components.

It's a good example of where specialist UFH design matters. The floor finish, floor construction, heat source and system components all need to be considered together to deliver the right result.

It's true. On a heated floor, it's also not the number that catches people out.
The timeline for levelling over UFH:

๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ– ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ ๐›๐ž๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ž - levelling over an existing heated screed? Heating off. Not turned down. Off.
๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ - working time once the bag is mixed. Only mix what you can lay.
๐Ÿ—๐ŸŽ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ - walk on it. That's at 20ยฐC.
๐Ÿ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ - porcelain, ceramic and natural stone. Unheated floors only. On a heated floor the drying process comes first.
๐Ÿ‘ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ - resilient coverings.
๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ - before the heating runs again. Then bring the floor temperature up gradually, not straight to setpoint.

It's the last one that bites. The floor looks finished on day one, the client wants heat, and someone fires it up on day three.

Below 5ยฐC the cement chemistry stalls and the set slows right down - it picks back up when the temperature does. Below freezing before it's set is the one you don't recover from. Integrity and performance are compromised.

Above 30ยฐC it goes off fast enough to be awkward to work.

If the manifold sits on the ground floor and is pushing water up to the first floor, air can collect at the high points. Enough of it and the flow rate drops away. Sometimes it stops altogether.
That is what the cold spots are. Not a failed loop, not a duff thermostat. Air sitting where the water needs to be.
We show the fix at the manifold in about a minute, plus the part you can fit so it stops happening again.

JG Woodcock Construction installed underfloor heating across 114.2mยฒ of ground floor in a new-build home in Bridgnorth.

Working from a full Ambiente design, the installation used:

Nobody is thinking much about heating right now.
Which is exactly why some of the best retrofit underfloor heating projects start in summer.

If floors are already coming up as part of a renovation, it is often the easiest and most cost-effective time to introduce UFH. The heating is off, disruption is easier to manage and there is more time available for installation, screed curing and commissioning.

Leave the conversation until autumn and programmes get tighter just as demand for heating work starts to rise.
