The question housebuilders are asking is no longer "radiators or UFH?"
It's: how do you make UFH predictable, repeatable and low risk across plots, house types and entire developments?

Because the direction is set. Part L, the Future Homes Standard and heat-pump-ready specifications all point toward low-temperature heating - and at heat-pump flow temperatures, radiator output drops sharply.

The hesitation is understandable. Radiators are visible and familiar. UFH sits concealed in the floor.

But concealed doesn't mean riskier. Designed properly, it's often the simpler system.

We recently brought in professional therapists to provide neck, shoulder, hand and arm treatments for our staff — giving everyone a chance to step away from their desks, reset, and ease some of the everyday tension that comes with a busy working week.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 that under pitch hydronic heating is used beneath some of the World Cup football pitches? At host venues including BMO Field in Toronto, Gillette Stadium in Boston and Kansas City Stadium / Arrowhead, heated fluid is circulated through pipework below the playing surface to help manage ground temperature and protect the turf.

The application is different from domestic wet underfloor heating, but the core principle is familiar: pipework below the surface, controlled water temperatures, and sensors feeding back to help regulate performance.

For homes, that means efficient, even heat across the floor area.
For stadiums, it helps keep the pitch ready for play.
Different environments. Same smart use of hydronic heat.

Delta T: the small reading that tells you a lot about a UFH system

In underfloor heating, Delta T is more than a number on a display.

It can help installers and specifiers understand whether a system is moving water correctly, transferring heat properly, and performing as the design intended.

Too high? You may be looking at restricted flow, trapped air, incorrect balancing or a loop that is not moving enough water.

Too low? It could be excessive flow, low demand, an open bypass, or simply a heat-pump-led system designed to run with a smaller temperature difference.

The important bit: don’t chase Delta T in isolation.
✅ Check the design.
✅ Check the heat source.
✅ Check whether the system is at steady state.
Then use the reading to confirm what the system is telling you.

Most UFH compliance issues don't show up on the drawing. They show up after the screed has gone off, when there's nothing cheap left to fix.

We've pulled together the six Part L clauses that cause the most site queries on UK dwellings - with paragraph references, a model spec clause, and a short coordination checklist for trades.

A few that get missed most often:
1️⃣ The 1.25m² K/W rule for UFH over unheated rooms - easy to lose when layouts get copied between house types
2️⃣ Different intermediate floor values for electric (0.5m² K/W) and wet (0.75m² K/W) systems
3️⃣ The 65mm screed setback rule, which sits in the UFH section rather than the main controls section
4️⃣ Why generic “to comply with Part L” wording in a spec does nothing to stop the detail being downgraded on site

Based on old, deep‑screed systems - not modern thin‑build or plate UFH.

2️⃣ “You need a 35 °C flow temp with a heat pump.”
Flow temperature is a result of emitter design, not a starting assumption.

3️⃣ “One zone per floor is fine.”
One of the most common causes of comfort complaints after handover.
