Chopping before shopping.

Now is the time to cut everything down that you’ve had up to give you that structure in the garden during the winter months. The only exception being your Hygrangea heads. Just wait until those morning frosts have headed off for good - hopefully by the end of the month. Then they too can receive a chop to expose the buds of 2025!

The Benefits of Getting Outside in the Garden

Gardening isn’t just about growing plants; it’s also a great way to boost your well-being. Here’s why:
• Physical Activity – Digging, planting, and weeding keep you active and strengthen muscles.
• Mental Relaxation – Being in nature reduces stress, improves mood, and promotes mindfulness.
• Fresh Air and Sunshine – Exposure to sunlight increases vitamin D levels, which supports bone health and immune function.
• Connection to Nature – Watching plants grow and bloom fosters a sense of accomplishment and connection to the environment.

They mark the end of the day in the most visually satisfying way possible—turning the sky into shades of orange, pink, and purple before fading into night.

One of the best things about sunsets is that they’re never exactly the same. Some days, they’re bold and dramatic, with fiery reds and deep purples. Other times, they’re soft and pastel, barely making a scene before the stars take over. Weather, location, and even the season can change how they look, which is probably why people never get tired of them.

The great news is they’re arriving later and later. Spring is on the way.

The crocus.

The little flower that pops up while winter is still half-asleep, shouting, “Spring is coming!” These tiny powerhouses bloom through snow, frost, and general seasonal confusion, making the rest of us feel like underachievers.

Some of them (Crocus sativus, to be exact) moonlight as the world’s most expensive spice dealers—producing saffron.

Saffron isn’t just expensive, it’s ridiculously expensive. We’re talking “you could buy a small car for the price of a few pounds” expensive. Why? Because harvesting saffron means plucking microscopic red threads from thousands of flowers.

So next time you see a crocus poking out of the ground, give it a nod of respect. It’s a tiny, hardworking little overachiever that refuses to wait for warmer weather—and might just be worth its weight in gold.

Sustainability plays such an important role in the garden, and there is nothing more satisfying than creating your own compost to then put it to work in enhancing your soil health.

What’s fantastic to see is the speed at which the worms get to work. This mound of waste needed some structure, and now 6 months since giving it some, the 3 bay approach is working wonders. It’s already created over a ton of compost which has arrived at the perfect time in this garden. Waste now enters into bay 1 on the left and travels to bay 2 and bay 3 before exiting back onto the garden.

We mulch at this time of year. With the bulbs on their way it’s great to get it down now to avoid stepping all over what is coming up from the ground.

The only thing to watch out for is walking on water logged beds because it will only aid compaction - creating your very own piece of Glastonbury now and then concrete in the middle of July.

Being on that soil health!
