Every human and natural system -- from oil extraction to the flight of a flock of starlings -- can be seen as a set of repeating patterns. These patterns can be disrupted for good or for bad, says Nigel Topping, the High Level Climate Action Champion for COP26, the UN's climate change conference set...

How to help the elderly
to live independently for longer

We enjoy independence from an early age because it gives us a great sense of self-worth, however, as we get older, aging in place can become challenging and many senior citizens and their families eventually find themselves in need of help.

Fortunately, smart home solutions have evolved over recent years and can now contribute significantly to helping the elderly retain their autonomy within their own homes, while also making it easier for them to stay in touch with family and friends.

However, generally speaking, most senior citizens dislike technology, so how do smart solutions tackle this problem? Well, the answer is simple, because voice commands, buttons and automations facilitate everything, with no need to touch the underlying technology:

Smart voice assistants and displays are at the heart of a smart solution because they centrally control every device and make it easy to stay in contact. Equally, they provide instant access to information, entertainment and reminders for important events, such as when to take medication.

Smart doorbells and cameras monitor the home and trigger alerts and automations when they detect movement, while also providing on demand video and two way communication.

Smart sensors and buttons trigger automations and alerts when something needs to happen or when a loved one becomes concerned.

Smart lights and sockets can reduce energy costs and sensor driven automations can deter intruders by turning the lights on when a door or window is opened unexpectedly.

Smart thermostats control the heating and hot water locally or remotely and can minimise energy use and costs.

Aging in place is a much more complex concept than usually portrayed and it means different things to different people, however, the key elements are:

• Keeping a degree of autonomy for as long as possible
• Continuing to live in a place or community that is familiar
• Maintaining a sense of purpose
• Avoiding feelings of being a burden
